Faith is the key to surmounting physical and spiritual obstacles. Believers ken and understand the potency of faith in their lives when times become arduous. There is no obstacle that cannot be overcome by the power of faith in God. The book Picking Cotton, the Bible, the movie Conviction, and many gospel songs are inspired by individuals who overcame obstacles of faith. These individuals include Ronald Cotton, Peter, Phillip, Betty Waters, Kenny, Kurt Carr, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, and Kirk Franklin.
In Addition, to the book Picking Cotton, the main character, Ronald Cotton overcomes obstacles of his faith when he is wrongfully convicted of raping two white women. Ronald Cotton keeps his cool thinking it is all just one big misunderstanding. With all the evidence on Ronald Cotton he is wrongfully charged with rape. “Lock him up,” Detective Sully is saying, pointing at Ronald Cotton like he is trash that needs to be put out (85).After Ronald Cotton is arrested he puts his faith in his lawyer that he will get him out of the situation. While in prison for rape, Ronald is tried by inmates in prison but does not let them push his buttons. As Cotton is walking into Central Prison, inmates scream, “Fresh meat,” and “Hey, pretty boy, I got something for you” (96) Ronald Cotton starts working in the kitchen. An inmate calls him skinny thing; Cotton does not give in or fight back, all he is thinking about is his reputation (98-102). All Ronald Cotton is worried about is getting out of prison and being around his family .When Ronald Cotton learns that Bobby Poole confessed to the rape of Jennifer Thompson to another inmate (110), He decides to murder Poole. Obstacles can be anything that stands in our way of reaching our goals, having prosperity, or being what God want us to be. Great faith endures great tribulations, each day comes with it is quota of struggles and difficulties and every minute victory becomes seed to grow our faith. Whether we are physically contacted by sickness, death, divorce, or unemployment we require grace to endure. But during endeavoring times we learn who we authentically are and more importantly, we learn about God‘s faithfulness.
