During the interview, the Physical Therapist I conferred with was very thorough and straightforward in his responses to the questions that were given. I decided to interview another one of my mother’s fellow co-workers, Mr. Stephen Chan, considering his new experiences in the Physical Therapy field. I met with Mr. Stephen Chan at the Kaiser Permanente Outpatient Orthopedic Clinic that is located in Union City. The essential subject matters that we discussed consisted of his Major and Minor in college, the Residency Program that he takes part in, variations of attitudes, and advantages in the workforce.
As usual, John is late. Because the other two Physical Therapists (PTs) are busy on their rounds, I just wait, sitting on the therapy tables reading the assorted pamphlets that are available to the patients. Every part of the body is represented in these books on the shelf. A slight humming sound comes from the air conditioner. The freshly waxed tile floor reflects the light that shines from the ceiling tract lights.
I chose Exercise Science as my major because I want to pursue a career in Physical Therapy. I have been through physical therapy throughout my entire life and it has always interested me and caught my attention. Most recently, was in 2015 after I needed surgery on my knee to repair a torn meniscus. The surgeon had to completely repair my meniscus because it was not just torn it had twisted and folded over on itself. I had to go through longer physical therapy than normal because this was not just a simple tear in the tissue. I will be getting another surgery on my knee in the near future so I will need to go through more physical therapy after that. It is better to have someone that has had those experiences and has seen things from the patient’s point of view so that they know how their patient is feeling going through therapy. I know I would rather have a physical therapist that knows what receiving the treatment is like and has gone through physical therapy before, rather than someone who has never received therapy and does not necessarily know what being a patient going through physical therapy feels like. The patient interviewed is a 21-year-old Caucasian female who will be referred to as C.L.; she was recently diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) and wants to seek more information about how to manage the disease. She is currently a nursing student at the University of Minnesota who enjoys playing soccer, being a part of her student organizations, and hanging out with her friends. C.L. experiences symptoms and complications such as dyspnea (shortness of breath), dizziness, chest pain, activity intolerance, and weakness due to her PH. These symptoms are felt when she exerts herself too much. Recently, every day activities such as walking have made her experience these symptoms, which is why she came to the clinic. She has a very supportive family that consists of a twin sister –who also goes to the University of Minnesota—and her two parents who want to help in any way they can.
I’ve had many thoughts about getting into various careers. Careers such as Marine Biologist, Veterinarian, Architect, Real Estate Agent, Astronomer, Doctor, Personal Trainer, Zoologist, Entrepreneur, Emergency Physician, Physician, and a Pharmacist; however, now that I’m a senior I have a certain piercing pressure placed upon my shoulders on figuring out what exactly I want to do. My fear is that I will choose to do something that I was not so sure about and by the time I realize it, it will be too late for I will be in a state of depression and regret. The path to becoming a physical therapist starts with a bachelor's degree. This program will cover a lot of science topics, such as anatomy and pharmacology. After I complete a bachelor's degree program, I won't be qualified to work as a physical therapist and I will need to complete a master's degree program. In a master's degree program, I will get to work in clinical situations, participate in internships and gain the necessary skills needed to become licensed Physical Therapist. A patient does not attend physical therapy to receive a lecture on the exercises he or she is to perform in order to improve what they came to improve upon; instead, physical therapists demonstrate and work closely with their patients in order to accomplish the most improvement. Physical therapy will perform an evaluation of your problem or difficulty. They evaluate your problem by performing tests and measures to assess the problem. These treatments are used to help decrease pain and increase movement and function. Physical therapy provides "hands on techniques" like massage or joint mobilizations skills to restore joint motion or increase soft tissue flexibility. They will focus on basic skills such as getting out of bed, walking safely with crutches or a walker, moving specific joints and muscles of the body. Physical therapists treatment includes patient education to teach them how to deal with a current problem and how to prevent the problem in the future. Such documentation is used to track the patient's progress, and identify areas requiring more or less attention. They encourage patients to use their own muscles. Perhaps the first time I became interested in Physical Therapy was a Wednesday evening, when my dad came home after a long and laborious day of cleaning pools. His shoulders were in pain, and I wished that I knew how to make the pain stop. All the adults in my life held labor intense jobs , men were either gardening or cleaning pools. The women were either maids or waitresses.
My first experience of insight towards physical therapy was a personal experience that involved my father. After being hit by a vehicle, he suffered a closed-head injury, and later entered several settings of physical therapy in aims to walk once again. As years passed by, his wheelchair transitioned to a walker, the walker to a cane, and eventually he was walking without any assistance. As my father regained the ability to walk, I witnessed his change of attitude, and the overall impact of his new physical and functional independence.
