Peter John Lindberg Summerland Analysis

When it comes to traveling to a familiar place, they are not always going to be so familiar. There is something about unfamiliarities in a familiar place that is refreshing and gives you a break from the monotony of most of your routines. In Peter Jon Lindberg's "Summerland", he talks about a vacation spot in Maine that he brings his family every year. He explains how the only thing that stays familiar year after year is the cottage in which they reside. "Constancy is the most underrated of virtues, in people but also in places." This quote by Lindberg perfectly describes this theme. No matter how many times you go to a destination in your lifetime, each experience and even the place itself will be different. Although it is not quite the same each time, there is a sense of comfort in returning to that family vacation spot. This is proven by Lindberg's statement, "What I've awoken to since is the soul-affirming joy of returning. Going back, it turns out, does not mean retreat. A ritual is not a rut." When I was younger my parents would take my sister and I to a spot near Pine Point around the same time in August for the end of our summer vacation. It was something that we could look forward to all year and we knew that no two years would be the same. There were new restaurants that would open up and also places with different types of activities such as a multilevel arcade. It was not the differences that I would look forward to though, but the things that were exactly the same. The camp site that we would stay at was always exactly the same as well as the quality time spent with family. No matter what the weather was like, nobody was worried, because just the time away from home secluded with your family was enough to keep us happy.
