People have many definitions of the word “traveling”, but Dictionary.com states that traveling is defined as “to move or go from one place or point to another”. This is how Suzanne Berne refers to traveling also. “Traveling Close, Very Close, To Home” is a book written by Berne and in the book she gives many examples about people traveling. The main idea of the book is to explain no matter if we travel far or travel close, we all travel at some points in our life even if we our wandering off in our own little world. Berne then goes on to talk about people and their travels in life with examples and descriptions. She addresses this word in a couple different ways: to travel in your mind, travel close distances, and lastly staying right at home. Berne uses “travel” through the mind by explaining, “Travel, in my opinion, is one part locomotion and three parts the desire for discovery. It should set the mind going” (413). Berne knows that any place one goes can be an adventure. Berne uses the word “travel” for close distances as well because she loves to be outside and enjoy nature from her words, “... I do wander locally for most of my excitement” (415). Berne says that to “travel” doesn’t mean to fly somewhere, people travel just by walking in the park, in the woods or enjoying a good book. The last of many ways that Berne uses “travel” is by traveling right in your own home. Berne read many stories about writers who stayed right at home, “some of the most stirring travel accounts I’ve ever read, in fact, have been written by people who stayed right at home” (414). The fourth Chapter of Estella Blackburn’s non fiction novel Broken lives “A Fathers Influence”, exposes readers to Eric Edgar Cooke and John Button’s time of adolescence. The chapter juxtaposes the two main characters too provide the reader with character analyses so later they may make judgment on the verdict. The chapter includes accounts of the crimes and punishments that Cooke contended with from 1948 to 1958. Cooke’s psychiatric assessment that he received during one of his first convictions and his life after conviction, marring Sally Lavin. It also exposes John Button’s crime of truancy, and his move from the UK to Australia.

John Steinbeck, the author of "Travels with Charley" wrote about his 1960's road trip about visiting multiple states. "What are Americans like today?"; that was the question that started his journey. His travels began in Long Island, New York, then he followed the outer border of the United States; from Maine to the Northwest. After he traveled to the Pacific Northwest, he went to Salinas Valley in California then across Texas, and through the Deep South. Finally after that 10,000 mile journey, he made is back safe and sound to New York.This rough and long trip included: meeting new people, exploring, and visiting different states.
Each person has a place that calls to them, a house, plot of land, town, a place that one can call home. It fundamentally changes a person, becoming a part of who they are. The old summer cabins, the bedroom that was always comfortable, the library that always had a good book ready. The places that inspire a sense of nostalgic happiness, a place where nothing can go wrong.
Most works of literature have their characters embarking on a journey or journeys to reach a desired location whether it is mentally or physically. These journeys do not stand alone but contribute to the piece as a whole. The Kite Runner focuses on Amir taking on life in his suffering country to moving to a land granting great opportunity and ultimately returning home to complete a deed that would stabilize him for the remainder of his life. In the epic The Odyssey, Odysseus or Ulysses in the Latin form takes on many challenges on the dangerous sea attempting to return home to Ithaca after being victorious in the Trojan War. Traveling can also reunite characters once again as it did for Amir and Hassan in The Kite Runner or bring together two such as Telemachus and Pisistratus in The Odyssey. “This journey has brought us together still more closely” (Homer 15.59-60). Characters walk through the journeys authors create on pages and typically change for the better or reach an ultimate goal.

Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate is the story of an African boy, Kek, who loses his father and a brother and flees, leaving his mother to secure his safety. Kek, now in Minnesota, is faced with difficulties of adapting to a new life and of finding his lost mother. He believes that his mother still lives and would soon join him in the new found family. Kek is taken from the airport by a caregiver who takes him to live with his aunt. It is here that Kek meets all that amazed him compared to his home in Sudan, Africa. Home of the brave shows conflicts that Kek faces. He is caught between two worlds, Africa and America. He feels guilty leaving behind his people to live in a distant land especially his mother, who he left in the midst of an attack.
