Why Students Should Have A Specific Time During The Day For Napping
Napping is essential to student’s health and their well being. Studies show how naps help one to be more alert and improves productivity. We all have a busy schedule as a student and often will not get the required sleep to do well. Our school needs a 45 minute period of DEAN (drop everything and sleep) instead of DEAR (drop everything and read), to improve mental and physical health, give students an energy boost, and improve our health, mood and productivity.
Naps during the school day can boost students’ productivity, memory and learning. A 2002 Harvard University study demonstrated that workers are more productive

Taking consistent short naps will help to lower tension decreasing a student's’ risk of high cholesterol and blood pressure. Sleep deprivation leads to an excess of the hormone cortisol in the body. Cortisol, a stress hormones, is what helps students’ deal with fight or flight responses. Unfortunately, having too much cortisol in the body will increase glucose intolerance and abdominal fat, weaken the muscular and immune systems, hinders memory and learning, and decreases the level of growth hormones in students’ bodies. On the other hand, when you sleep you release a growth hormone, the opposite of cortisol, which boosts the immune system, reduces stress and anxiety, and helps with muscle repair and weight loss. A six year greek study found that people who took a 30 minute nap at least three times a week had a 37% less risk of dying from a heart-related condition. Participants of the study were asked if they took midday naps and how often . They were also asked about dietary habits and physical activity. Researchers found that the participants who took naps of any frequency and duration had a 34% lower risk of dying from heart disease than participants who did not take midday naps. The ideal hours for taking a nap are between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm as by then it is usually subsequent to lunchtime when students’ energy and blood sugar start to dip. …show more content…
Additionally, sneaking in a nap during the day can boost student’s mood by getting rid of sleep-deprived irritability. Many students’ will drink coffee for a midday reboot, however, consuming caffeine in the afternoon can have a negative impact on your nighttime rest. Napping is a natural way to restore students energy, so why not provide student’s with the opportunity to nap for 45 minutes? Taking a nap during the day can be one option to treating sleep deprivation. According to Sara C. Mednick, a sleep expert and author, “You can get incredible benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of napping.” Also, Mednick said, “You reset the system and get a burst of alertness and increased motor performance. That’s what most people really need to stave off sleepiness and get an energy boost.” While the length and of your nap and the type of sleep can help to determine the benefits. A 20 minute power nap, or a stage 2 nap, is good for alertness and motor learning skills such as typing and playing the piano. On the other hand, napping for more than 30 to 60 minutes comes in handy for decision making skills. Getting rapid eye movement or REM sleep which is usually 60 to 90 minutes of napping plays a major role in making new connections in the brain and solving creative problems. Sleep is an important part of student's daily routine, much like having a good breakfast or a healthy
Researchers have found a way to connect sleep with education. Gary Scarpello who wrote "Lack Of Sleep Could Be Trouble For CTE Students” , did a research study with liberty mutual showed that teens had an average of 7.2 hours of sleep on school nights and 33 to 75 % of all students have sleep problems. In the article it had stated that not getting enough sleep can cause impaired hand eyed coordination, reaction time and brief mental lapses. (Scarpello). The same researchers also found out that Sleep helps restores brain functions such as alertness, metabolism, and memory and regulate hormones (Scarpello). Researchers Mary A. Carskardon and A.R. Wolfson studied 3,120 Rhode Island children. They had figured out that college students who slept more than nine hours a night had a gr...
Since a nap should only be 26 minutes, the length suggested by NASA researchers (Rosekind), nap time could easily incorporate into the school day, either by adding time onto the conclusion of the school day, by taking a few minutes off of classes, or a combination of the two. Students would utilize this 26 minutes to nap, thereby increasing cognitive functioning and avoiding a plethora of medical ailments. In a model suggested by Meizen High School in Japan, teachers “dim the lights and put on classical music” and students put their heads down on their desks and sleep (Murugappan). In addition to this model, schools could also offer students the option of bringing their own sleeping bags or “nap mats” and reporting to the gym during nap time in order that students could lie down while they nap, which would offer a peaceful experience conducive to sleeping. By offering students these options, schools could not only ensure that students would be able to have a napping experience that would allow them to regain cognitive functioning lost by sleep deprivation but also achieve this in such a way that removes remarkably little time from the school day. On the other hand, some argue for a later school start time as the best way to reduce teenage sleep deprivation; in their view, the school day should instead start at 8:30 or 9:00 A.M. and last until 4:30 or 5:00 P.M. in order to allow students to awaken later in the morning. The organization School Start Later cites various statistics regarding sleep deprivation in order to argue for a later school start time, and although this may be true, a
In Source #3, the author states that “...studies show that taking a short nap after learning new information may help you remember that information better!” and “Nap lengths between 10-20 minutes have been shown to increase productivity, decrease fatigue, and improve mood.” Naps are vital to possess the ability to be at the top of your classes and have a good school year. They can recharge you a bit and help you feel more alert to do all the homework or volunteer work you could be doing but too tired to. Many students these days are not getting enough sleep, because we have to wake up early and are expected to be alert all day.
Sleeping is something that is an essential part of human nature and is a must in order for one to be a functional human being. Sleep is an idea that is accompanied by many wives’ tales, including the ideas that one needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night and alcohol helps one fall asleep and sleep more soundly. One myth about sleep is that during sleeping, one is in a state of nothingness. In truth, however, it has been discovered that during sleep the brain is active, variations in heartbeat and breathing occur, and the eyes and ears are active throughout the time of sleep. These activities during a person’s sleep are important because they help that person be more aware, awake, and alert during consciousness. If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially in college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator to their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related the level of performance and health in an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).
The First reason when not taking a nap is that your not able to be focusing and your mind and body will start to shut down. In the first story it talks about," Many people during the daytime fatigue that keeps them from feeling or performing their best" However if they get a little time to take a to take a nap it would improved their performance. Many people claim that if you get more sleep at night it would make you more prepared during the day. The research group thinks taking a nap is a good healthy habit and lower rate of heart disease. Some people think naps don't think that naps are not the solutions.
It is revealed in source #1 that “Naps provide a short-term boost in alertness and performance.” This not only reveals that it provides a boost in vigilance. However, it also exposes that the short term boost in also improves your performance. People may argue that It is only a short-term boost. This counter argument is bad because if an individual takes a long nap, it will provide a long-term boost that will help people throughout the rest of the day.
Opinion About Afternoon Naps Trying to find out, whether afternoon naps will benefit us. My opinion on this issue is that somewhat this is true because I have took an afternoon nap, and this lowered my tiredness from work. My work habitat is really busy and stressfull. Sometimes I have chances of ten-minute breaks, but I can say that later on work comes in heavier. In the article, "Naps Benefit Both Mind and Body"in paragraph 3, is stated that "taking naps improves people's problem solving skills".
First, if you get enough sleep every night then you wouldn't need a nap. Most people need somewhere between 10-12 hours of sleep to get a good night's rest. If you don't get enough sleep naps can help, if you don't get enough sleep at night it ‘’leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, impaired driving, and trouble remembering’’ says psychiatrist William C. Demet in source 1 paragraph 3. So getting naps in are good for people, so nothing bad happens. Naps aren't just for kids, they're for grown ups to.
In source two it states,’’ that people become better at their work and make less mistakes’’. Therefore adult or kids have a greater chance at doing school work ,jobs work or just doing what the boss asked or teachers when they take naps routinely during the day .Bosses rather their employees to come to do work and be ready to fix mistakes rather than to make new ones. Than the employer would have to spend company money on mistakes that he or she hired someone to fix. Teachers on the other hand rather their students to come to school ready to learn than ready to fall asleep while they teach that leads to the student failing the class and making more mistakes than what the need to be made in the activity there being taught .Naps can recharge your brain so that people don’t make various
Everybody needs proper rest in order to feel fully refreshed and focused. Throughout time, studies have shown that a human being needs a certain amount of sleep to tackle their daily responsibilities. If for whatever reason they cannot get a complete rest at night, naps are a fantastic and efficient solution to catch up on some much needed rest. As a young adult, I make an increased effort to make sure I get as much rest as I need.
secretary of education talks about the benefits of delaying school (Varna-White). In 2009, 200 students from St. George’s boarding school agreed to participate in the study of sleep habits by delaying the start time by 30 minutes (Dooren). The students completed a sleeping habit survey before and after the shift in the school-start time. Although the start time changed, the lights-out times of between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. were not changed. At the end of the study, the average sleep duration on school nights increased by 45 minutes to nearly eight hours.
Specific purpose: To persuade my audience to take care of our sleep duration as it may affect our daily life.
Fifty six percent of students report being tired throughout the school day, which can lead to missed information and confusion (Wysong). According to this statistic, over half the students in class are not going to achieve their maximum learning potential in school. In order to avoid this problem, a teenager's brain typically needs to sleep from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am (“High schools starting later to help sleepy teens”). However, most high schools require students to be in class as early as 7:15 or 7:30 am. As a result, many adolescents simply do not have the opportunity to get enough rest. Changing the traditional school time to start later in the day will benefit adolescent sleep cycles, promote learning, and prevent disease by regulating the body. Ideally,...
It is believed that daytime napping will cause sleeping problems at night, make you lazy and make you drowsy throughout the day. As long as your nap is early enough in the day, between one or three o’clock, the nap should not affect your night sleeping. According to National Sleep Foundation, after lunch your blood sugar and energy level naturally drops. It is your body’s personal clock telling you that it is time for a nap or something to help relax the mind and body. Nobody can make changes to the body’s personal clock, it is something that naturally occurs.
Sleep is a very important factor in the human function. Our body and brain is able to reset itself and rejuvenate while we sleep. When we do not get the required amount of sleep, we start to feel lethargic and foggy minded, because our mind and body wasn’t able to replenish itself. Sleep is imperative that an insignificant rest deficiency or lack of sleep can affect our ability to remember things; decisions and can affect our temperament. Chronic sleep deficiency can get the body to feel agitated and it could lead to serious health problems such as, heart problems, stress, acne, and obesity.
