To Mine Or Not To Mine Dear Mr Giles I am writing to you to persuade you to cancel Fat Cat mining’s new uranium mine plan. The reason of this is because the uranium mine would take place in Kakadu National Park, a world heritage site. If you don’t know, a World Heritage Site is by definition “a natural or man-made site, area, or structure recognized as being of outstanding international importance and therefore as deserving special protection”. Kakadu was listed as a World Heritage site due to its cultural and natural aspects. The park features a beautiful landscape filled with dozens of species both flora and fauna. We should stop Fat Cat mining’s uranium mine for the following reasons; The amount of landscape as well as flora and fauna that would be destroyed would be horrible, these ecosystems would be demolished, as well as the fact that mining for uranium could cause several potential dangers to the area, such as radiation poisoning, and finally if Kakadu national park were to be mined we would loose a bug place of cultural significance, and the result of mining would also produce a major eyesore. “Approximately 50 per cent of the land in the park is Aboriginal land under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, and most of the remaining area of land is under claim by …show more content…
These are the main reasons why Kakadu National Park was made a world heritage site in the first place! Some of the important species in Kakadu National Park involve; the endangered quoll, pandarus, spear grass, flatback turtles, the come-crested jacana and brolga. There are over 2000 plant species and over 3000 animal species in Kakadu. These poor native animals and plants are key reasons why there should be no mining in Kakadu National
A puppy mill is a horrible place that breeds dogs. Dogs that are breedable may get little to no recovery time between pregnancies. Dogs and puppies are stuffed into wire cages that can harm them. Puppy mills tend to be overcrowded disease and virus filled places. Puppy mills focus on profit rather than the health of the dogs. Many dogs are bred with little regard of genetic quality. Dogs in puppy mills are deprived of veterinary care, food, water, and socialization. If a dog is older and unable to breed anymore they are likely to be killed. Some dogs may never see the light of day or get any attention.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to help abolish puppy mills by adopting and volunteering. Those no matter how big or small their efforts are, that can make a difference and help cease puppy mills and their perpetuation in our society.
First, the stance on nuclear power and uranium mining has been at the centre of fierce controversy. Tim Flannery stated (Boyd 2006):
The more than four hundred locations that are currently recognized as national parks have been set aside because they are considered special places of beauty, character, or uniqueness. Whether visitors come from the natural state or the concrete jungle, the magnificent aesthetics of these sites can cause anyone to be astonished. As they ponder on the wonderful landscapes and the closeness to the wilderness, their souls are nourished. Some people acknowledge the planet or the creator, but all appreciate the splendor of biodiversity and gain a new understanding of it. According to Frye and Nuest, “watching other species and interacting with them helps [people] better understand and appreciate [their] place among them and [their] obligations to other living creatures and the same planetary environment that sustain both [their and the lives of other species]” (54). Furthermore, since these sites have been carefully preserved, they have undergone very little physical or geological change in centuries. The NPS claimed through its website that “by preserving biodiversity, [they] also ensure that future citizens, artists, and explorers of science experience [America’s] lands as the founders of the parks did long ago.” National parks allow visitors to relive scenes from the past and appreciate the nation’s history as expressed in these iconic sites. However,
Although the assessment displayed many threats, this project will address only one causal chain: of the inefficiency of co-management agreement in the park. The contributing factors for this direct threat are first, the lack of revision of the agreement since 1991. The last stage of the co-management agreement inside of Kakadu National park was signed 27 years ago. Although this co-management agreement has been through different stages and revisions, very important aspects of the context have changed since then. It is proposed in this project that a revision is needed to assure that the agreement has both benefits for traditional owners and to wildlife in the park. Secondly, currently, there are conflicting agendas and conflicting definitions of the problem within the participants. This has created for different programs and policies to be created, often in conflict with one another. For example, wide-range poisoning of quolls by traps to kill dingoes implemented by one agency that seeks to exterminate invasive species (such as wild dogs/dingoes). Another example of what different problem definitions can create is the foxes example. An agency can see foxes as the main issue, and the solution is to target foxes with poisoning bait. What happens, then, is numbers of feral cats and rabbits, which are also hunted by foxes, tend to boom once the foxes are gone. So, small marsupials (i.e. quolls) will still be hunted – only by cats instead – and the rabbits will wreak havoc in the landscape, depriving native animals of food and shelter. This connects to the third contributing factor, the multiplicity of agencies, and lack of exchange between them. Because Australia works under the frame of a decentralized government, many agencies and organizations do not communicate with each other or are held accountable. This then creates a very complex social process, which then creates a very
Power drills have become one of the essential pieces of kit every budding DIY enthusiast must have, and particularly every professional. Even if you never get past putting up pictures, it is always easier with a decent piece of equipment. Drills have come one quite a lot since the Egyptians first invented them, but strangely, the core principles are still similar! Power drills can be found corded or cordless. Both have their positive and negative points, but both can be used for simple and more advanced tasks.
“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight, and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived, and died in cotton fields, and sweatshops.”- Stephen Jay Gould. Sweatshops exploit people, and children. They take advantage of their poverty, and there need, for a better life. Sweatshops are one of the worst things that ever happened to the business world, and poor people around the world. Sweatshops should be stopped, and ended.
Most seventeen year olds participate in a winter sport, myself included. Most started participating in their sport when they’re young, myself included. Most seventeen year old’s sport doesn’t take them to competitions in Main, Quebec, or Alaska, but mine did and still does. I race sled dogs. My parents met at a dog race in Chugiak, Alaska, a suburb of Anchorage. I’ve grown up playing with puppies, helping my parents to the start line, and racing my own team. I would go to my parent-teacher conference every year in elementary school and listen to my mom explain that we would be going to Alaska for two and a half months, and that I would need my work before we left. We experienced different reactions every year. For example, my second grade teacher exclaimed “So are you running the Iditarod? That’s so cool!” This reaction is common. Most people don’t know how the sport of dog racing works. Most people think a sled dog is a fluffy dog that logs hundreds of miles because their heartless owners forcing them to, but unfortunately this stereotype
Erick Solheim’s article on national parks and conservation efforts clearly depicts his passion for the environment. His piece, “National Parks Are Not Enough to Protect Nature” was recently published in Time Magazine. The article revolves around a biennial Protected Planet Report released in 2016 by the U.N Environment, and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The report notes an increase in the number of countries who are working towards conservation efforts and meeting global preservation targets. Solheim also emphasizes the benefits of preserving the world’s most productive and diverse areas, which are often national parks.
Many things are affected by tourism. Almost everything in the park can suffer from the tourist. Some of the things that are affected are the plants/vegetation, the water, landscape, the animal life, geology, minerals and fossils, and the soil (portals.iucn.org). Some people forget that the negative impacts of tourism are not only
“The world is looking at us. You’ve gotta be lowering your greenhouse gas emissions, not increasing.” A quote by Senator Ed Markey. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, honourable judges, chairperson, timekeeper, and of course my fellow opponents. The topic that we are discussing today is “This house believes that expanding oil pipeline infrastructure is an utmost priority for Canada.”
In 2007, the world consumed 5.3 billion tons of coal, 31.1 billion tons of oil, 2.92 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, and 65,000 tons of uranium. All of these energy needs could have been met with only 6,600 tons of thorium, an abundant, slightly radioactive element found in the Earth’s crust.
Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.
Pollution is affecting many individuals and life, as we know it. We need to do something about how it’s affecting our world. That’s why I urge the issue that more people should realize that pollution is an issue that needs to be prevented because of its negative consequences. Which are health affects, the total destruction of environments, and the death of animals and plants. More awareness must be brought up amongst the people and they must realize the long-term benefits it has for the world.
PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that we must take action now to control air pollution
