56 years ago, UNESCO declared that all children should be entitled to a free education. Why, given this right, are there still 160,000 kids a day who are too scared to come to school? Why, despite the effort to ensure equality for each American, do many students feel inferior to their peers? Why, regardless of educators attempts to make school feel safe, do a large minority of the youth feel vulnerable in the hallways or in the classroom? The answer is bullying, and the solution is in the hands of the student. Bullying is one of the most destructive forces in public education, and it’s the responsibility of individual students to help eliminate bullying in all age groups.

This is a call to the bullies, to treat others with respect, and in a civil manner which you would only expect from a peer. This is the call to victims, to rebel against the chains of social stigma which bar them from the social experience that they deserve. This is a call to the student bystanders to muster up the courage to defend the innocent, and to repress the powers given to bullies through the status quo of indifference. This is a call to the educators, to ensure each student feels unopposed in their wishes for a safe learning environment.
But educators are already doing their part. From strict no tolerance bullying policies to the anti-bullying campaigns that are far too often shoved down students throats, they’ve tried everything they can feasibly execute. Educators have tools of persuasion, but who stands witness to name calling from the back of the class? Who stands witness to daily beatings among the blacktop of the school at recess? However, we are not asking for a testimony. We are not asking for jury duty. We are simply asking for the minor difference every student can make. For which student cannot afford the word “stop”, or the time to speak to an authority? Students have the power, and they must address their responsibilities and use it. You won’t know until it’s too late if the Facebook post you see on your own computer screen is the one that ties the noose. Contrary, you do know that the post ties one more string, rendering the victim a mental marionette. So where is the moral obligation to make the difference that significantly lacks in today’s modern society? When will students find their conscience and the determination to make a change? Why not today?
