Every year in Australia, according to Australia’s national Smoking Quit-line 15,000 people die from smoking. This number included, mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers, husbands and wives, which leaves a lot of irreplaceable vacancies in families across Australia. These losses could have all been avoided if smoking was banned in Australia. Which us to my point; I believe that smoking should be made illegal across the whole of Australia. Not only does smoking have a detrimental impact on our already fragile environment but the overall cost of cigarettes also has a negative impact on households. Smoking also tears apart our priceless families, as the impact of this nasty habit can be fatal.

As a result of this fact, cigarette and other smoking equipment start around 2,500 fires a year in Australia. A study conducted by the NSW Fire and Rescue service found that on a 27-degree day, 4% of the trails where a lit cigarette was thrown into grass on the side of the road caught fire and needed fire fighters to extinguish the flames before they burned out of control. This study also found that cigarettes ignited hay in 33% of the cases after performing laboratory trails. After the results of this study had been published, Station officer Scott from FRNSW stated that there is definite potential for fires caused by dropped cigarette butts especially in bushfire season. He also stated that, “a careless act by one person may have dire consequences for other, including the fire fighters who risk their lives at fires.” This is a major reason why I strongly believe that smoking should be banned, as it can help contribute to cutting down the numbers of fires that Australia experienced. Furthermore, cigarette butts and toxins can prove a major havoc on Australia’s marine life. Each single cigarette contains over 4,000 harmful and deadly chemicals encases in them, including the most well-known substance, nicotine, which is highly addictive. As stated by Quit-Line 3,793 people died from smoking in Australia in 2010. This number included the deaths of 8 children and 27 adults after being continually exposed to second hand smoke. The main cancer caused by smoking and second hand smoke is lung cancer. However, as stated by Australian Government site, Tobacco in Australia smoking can also cause other types of serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses such as Oesophageal cancer, Parkinson’s disease, heart diseases, and peripheral vascular disease. Tobacco in Australia has also stated that smoking can lead to low birthweight in newborns with 12 newborns dying of this in 2005. Most of these conditions have a very high death rate, take for example, around 30% of all known cases of heart disease in citizens under 60 are due to smoking states the Victorian Quit-Line. Many of the health conditions brought about through smoking are untreatable, resulting in high death rates which could’ve have been avoided if smoking was banned in Australia.
