Living in the South, firearms are a part of people's’ lives, as some like to hunt or shoot for fun. Some people respect firearms, as they are used to protect the country. In other parts of the country, guns are perceived as highly dangerous weapons that cause crime to happen. Both of these points are true, and people on both sides will not give up their opinion. Siding with the “guns are dangerous” side, it is true that firearms are used in a deadly capacity more often than used recreationally. Several things have been done to try to prevent gun violence, but the amount of firearm related deaths remains high. In order to prevent this, legislation needs to restrict the limits of gun distribution and production, be made aware of those who own a firearm, and educate the people who like to use guns. The government has the authority to ban firearms all together. Since that would not be in the best public opinion, they have tried to put restrictions on how and where guns are sold. The Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 says that all dealers must have a license and keep records of whom the firearms are sold. While this federal law sounds good, felons and other illegal firearm holders continue to find ways to acquire them. If the existing rules regarding the distribution and production of firearms were more heavily enforced, as well as new rules were enacted, several deaths would be prevented. The government also should possess records of those with firearm ownership, and also be aware of those who should not own a gun.
