Most skin cancers are preventable. To protect yourself, follow these skin cancer prevention tips:
• Avoid the sun during the middle of the day. For many people in North America, the sun 's rays are strongest between about 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day, even in winter or when the sky is cloudy.
You absorb UV radiation year-round, and clouds offer little protection from damaging rays. Avoiding the sun at its strongest helps you avoid the sunburns and suntans that cause skin damage and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Sun exposure accumulated over time also may cause skin cancer.
• Wear sunscreen year-round. Sunscreens don 't filter out all harmful UV radiation, especially the radiation …show more content…

Average patient would have difficulty understanding this teaching material.
According to U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy 32 million adults cannot read, which is 14 percent of population. 21 percent of the adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level (www.huffingtonpost.com, 2014). If the average reading level of American adults is about 5th grade level, I found this education material is not understandable for the average American. This patient education material (PEM) should been written at a 5th grade reading level.

This PEM used some of the abbreviation like UV, SPF, melanoma, dermatologist etc., which may be difficult for public understand. It should explain what is UV such as ultraviolet light from sun. SPF, which is sun protection factor and its range from 10 to 30. Better explanation of skin cancer such as, Skin cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the skin. No- melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Being exposed to ultraviolet radiation may increase the risk of skin cancer. People are the greater risk of getting skin cancer like fair skin that freckles and burns easily, does not tan, or tans poorly, blue or green or other light colored eyes. Red or blond hair etc. Use some pictures to complain what is skin cancer looks like and what to compare with. Therefore, the patient can visualize the differences and become aware of it. This teaching material touched and covered some of the information but not all. Just by reading one can receive some information, may be not all of them. There can be the teaching plan added with the pictures and diagram how sun light affects the skin
