The character Shaun Murphy once said on the TV show The Good Doctor, “The day that the rain smelled like ice cream, my bunny went to heaven in front of my eyes. The day that the copper pipes in the old building smelled like burnt food, my brother went to heaven in front of my eyes. I couldn’t save them. It’s sad. Neither one had the chance to become an adult. They should have become adults. They should have had children of their own and loved those children. And I want to make that possible for other people.¨ Around 26 million to 50 million students ride a school bus to school every day (American school bus council). It needs to be required to have seat belts, like in cars, to keep those 26 million students safe and alive. If we put seatbelts on school buses, it would prevent unnecessary deaths from occurring. Six students a year die from a school bus crashing and thousands of students get hurt in school bus crashes. By putting seat belts these numbers would go down drastically. School buses are designed for frontal collisions (most common crash) and not other types of crashes like rolling and being hit from behind (Faris, Wash, Wagschal, Newman, Ferguson). When we decrease the numbers of casualties, it would stop grief for many people because the child died from not having a seatbelt on. Would you want you beloved family member dead or seriously injured because the government failed to make it a law to wear a seat belt on a school bus? These six deaths a year cause pain for many people and their death could have been prevented by seat belts. If we can prevent death, even if it is only six people a year, isn't those six lives worth spending a little extra money to prevent them from
