Private Home Care and the Importance of Sunscreen

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 90 percent of all skin cancers that is not melanoma and 65 percent of all melanomas are directly related to sun exposure. Upwards of 3.5 million cases are reported in the US every year. Melanomas can be fatal.

In addition to skin cancer, direct exposure to the sun's rays can age a person's skin and reduce their quality of life. The most common form of premature aging are wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin.

It should be noted that exposure to the sun is not bad in and of itself. In fact, sun exposure is important for the body to create vitamin D. The sun also improves people's moods, increases the desire to exercise, and helps to regulate sleep cycles. The part of sun exposure that is dangerous are the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are three types of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Presently, the majority of UVC rays are absorbed the the earth's ozone layer.
