Introduction The purpose of this study is to explore the growing problem in schools in the United States with students not attending on a regular basis, this could be missing one class, or an entire day. American students are missing school or classes at a very high rate, and with added pressures on schools to increase graduation rates; schools need to discover why students are missing school and fix the problem. Research Problem It seems fairly clear that there is not one reason why students miss class or an entire day, in fact, the reason could be different for every student in the school. There are so many factors that lead to a student not coming to school that you cannot have these overarching policies that will hurt students negatively. Why are students missing class on a regular basis? Is it something that can be fixed, or has it become a cultural problem? Can individual schools do anything to improve attendance and therefore increase graduation rates? Is there a program or an idea that actually works? Purpose Statement As schools begin to develop programs that aim to improve attendance, how will they know if it is making a difference or doing what they intended? You have to look at the entire picture to understand what is going on. Yes, schools should actively be working on developing programs to help identify students that are missing high numbers of school days as it is better to identify these students early on in the year, before it becomes too late.
