Picture this you wake up one day and there are more than 1,000 people living on your land. It’s a pretty large piece of land with enough supplies to support your lifestyle. However, with 1,000 more people living in that same area, it has become crowded and compact. The next day, 1,000 more people come to live on your land. This continues to happen every day for many years, soon supplies start to become scarce and space starts to be a rarity. Sadly, this is our reality. There are 7.4 billion human beings on the face of the Earth and just in the United States alone there are 323 million. We are contaminating the earth with “Pesticides, fertilizers, industrial chemicals and wastes, fossil fuel emissions, and residential runoff have polluted much of our fresh water supply. Thirty-three percent of the lake acreage and 15 percent of the total river miles within the U.S. are so contaminated with mercury, PCBs and other chemicals”(Lehman p15) this is detrimental to our health and we should be more catcious. Our planet is suffering from severe pollution, which ranges from contaminated air, water and soil as well. Humans are doing nothing to reduce the amount of pollution that is harming our earth. To understand how pollution works first you must understand that there are different types of pollution. The most common types of pollution and the ones that I will be focusing on which are the ones doing the most harm to our planet are air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination and littering. In order to help out and reduce pollution in our planet people need to be more aware of what these problems are and about the severe damages that they are causing our planet. Before industrialization really jumped into place and had an effect on large cities, nature had its own way of cleaning up its own air and itself. Wind scattered gases, rain washed many substances and the rest dissolved into the ground; while plants absorbed carbon dioxide and made it into oxygen. With big cities growing more every time and with more towns that were becoming more industrialized a lot of more waste began to be released into the environment and the atmosphere and soon this was more than enough for nature to handle. In order to stop and reduce pollution people need to understand the damage that it is causing our environment and our planet as well. People need to be more aware of how they can help out and do their part in reducing these problems that are causing our planet to die slowly with people not even noticing it.
What is the problem with overpopulation, one might ask? More people on the Earth? Great! More people to expand humanity! More geniuses born into each generation to solve the problems the last generation left behind. What’s the big deal? Surprisingly, on the order of serious environmental problems, few people outside the scientific or political spheres have any idea about the threat overpopulation poses. The Earth’s population as of now is about 6 billion right now. It took the entirety of human existence up until 1960 to reach the level of 3 billion. It took, oh, 30 years after that for the world’s population to double. How long will it take to double again? As of now, all the soldiers that died in World War II would be replaced within less than half an hour. No one has any idea how many people the Earth is actually able to hold. As of now, we are sitting on a larger version of Easter Island not sure when the shoe is going to drop. More geniuses born to solve our problems for us? Not if they are born in to peasant parents in an Indian town and never get the education they can use to help humanity. The truth is we have no idea how many people the Earth can hold. One can even argue that the Earth can’t support all the people it has now. Millions upon millions do not have it as cushy as Americans do, there is mass starvation in many third world countries as well as other problems associated with children.

Population sizes were small, and life-supporting tools were simple. Most of the energy needed for work was provided by the worker and animals.
