ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
Efforts to improve the standard of living for humans--through the control of nature and the development of new products--have also resulted in the pollution, or contamination, of the environment. Much of the world's air, water, and land is now partially poisoned by chemical wastes. Some places have become uninhabitable. This pollution exposes people all around the globe to new risks from disease. Many species of plants and animals have become endangered or are now extinct. As a result of these developments, governments have passed laws to limit or reverse the threat of environmental pollution.
Ecology and Environmental Deterioration
The branch of science that deals with how living things, including humans, are related to their surroundings is called ecology . The Earth supports some 5 million species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. These interact and influence their surroundings, forming a vast network of interrelated environmental systems called ecosystems. The arctic tundra is an ecosystem and so is a Brazilian rain forest. The islands of Hawaii are a relatively isolated ecosystem. If left undisturbed, natural environmental systems tend to achieve balance or stability among the various species of plants and animals. Complex ecosystems are able to compensate for changes caused by weather or intrusions from migrating animals and are therefore usually said to be more stable than simple ecosystems. A field of corn has only one dominant species, the corn plant, and is a very simple ecosystem. It is easily destroyed by drought, insects, disease, or overuse. A forest may remain relatively unchanged by weather that would destroy a nearby field of corn, because the forest is characterized by greater diversity of plants and animals. Its complexity gives it stability.
Population Growth and Environmental Abuse
The reduction of the Earth's resources has been closely linked to the rise in human population. For many thousands of years people lived in relative harmony with their surroundings. Population sizes were small, and life-supporting tools were simple. Most of the energy needed for work was provided by the worker and animals. Since about 1650, however, the human population has increased dramatically. The problems of overcrowding multiply as an ever-increasing number of people are added to the world's population each year.
Air Pollution
Factories and transportation depend on huge amounts of fuel--billions of tons of coal and oil are consumed around the world every year. When these fuels burn they introduce smoke and other, less visible, by-products into the atmosphere.
The main duties that I participated in included cleaning and sanitation of the kennels, client waiting rooms, and all the treatment rooms. Another duty that I was responsible for was helping the kennel technicans with each patient's nutrition and with their exercise requirements, which I honestly I enjoy this duty requires me to analyze each patients information and cater to each of their needs, this allows me to know each patient on a more personal level. I also help the vet technicians and veterinarians in regards to help prep the surgery room, retrieve and draw up vaccines for patients, help restrain patients for shots, and help restrain for body exams. One factor that I abosuletly admire about my internship experience with Cy-Fair Animal
There is no escaping the fact that the cost of college tuition continues to rise in the United States each year. To make it worse, having a college degree is no longer an option, but a requirement in today’s society. According to data gathered by the College Board, total costs at public four-year institutions rose more rapidly between 2003-04 and 2013-14 than they did during either of the two preceding decades (Collegeboard.com). Students are pressured to continue into higher education but yet, the increasing costs of books and tuition make us think about twice. Sometimes, some of these students have to leave with their education partially finished, leaving them with crushing debts. It is important to find the means to prevent these students that are victimized by skyrocketing tuitions from dropping out, and encourage all incoming high school seniors to continue their education.
This past year I was hired to work at the veterinarian clinic in Bullard. Within one month I got to help de-claw a cat and watch many surgeries. I learned how to medicate animals without getting bit, give hydrotherapy, and many other things. My title was kennel attendant and I still tried to help and learn up front, in surgery, when I finished the kennel. I always watched for depressed animals especially the ones that went though surgery, because sometimes with out the tender care they needed they would not eat and lose weight.
In 1994, the world population was 5 602 800 000. This population had a doubling time of only forty-one years (De Blij and Muller, 1994, p.527). The massive amount of people has had highly destructive impacts on the earth’s environment. These impacts occur on two levels: global and local. On the global level, there is the accumulation of green house gases that deplete the ozone layer, the extinction of species, and a global food shortage. On the local level, there is erosion of soils (and the loss of vegetation), the depletion of water supply, and toxification of the air and water. The earth is dynamic though, all of these aspects are interrelated, and no one impact is completely isolated. All of these destructive elements can be traced to our enormous population. As the population increases, so do all of the economic, social, and technological impacts.
In discussing a few cases that have occurred in the United States, we will look at the case of Rachel Holt, a sixth grade teacher who abused one of her students. Although it paints a grand picture, Dulong (2006), explains how Holt confessed to authorities that during a week in March 2006 how she had sexual intercourse and oral sex with a 13 year old boy 27 times. She also disclosed to authorities that she called the home of her student disguising to be the mother of one of his friends asking his father’s girlfriend if he (student) could attend the sleep over of her child, in order to lure him to her
...hat will only get so far, your clinic doesn’t run on where you graduated from or how high your skill set is. You are a team , you must be willing to learn all that you can, listen to others point of view, help each other and most importantly do anything you possibly can to help the patient/client. I never realized how many hours go into being a veterinary technician it is not a normal 9 to 5 job you can’t leave a bleeding patient on the table and say “oh it is time to leave,” you are there until the job is done. There was countless of times where I got there at 7:30 in the morning and my hours ended at 7PM but I didn’t leave until 8:30-9 o’clock. I met a bunch of passionate animal lovers and learned so much from each and every one of them. This internship only validated what I have always wanted to do, and I can’t wait to graduate and become a veterinary technician.
Like so many other high school students, the exorbitant cost of higher education is not something I or my family are financially prepared for, and yet it is required for the careers I wish to pursue. As a result, I will inevitably attend a school that may not prepare me for my future as adequately as another due to cost. I know that among my peers, several will not be able to attend college or will choose not to because of the financial instability caused by earning a degree. As a culture that considers such degrees as a prerequisite for working, it is only logical to provide a more reasonable way to achieve
Regulations have helped tremendously however, there has been an issue with the coal burning plants that were exempted from the Clean Air Act laws because they were grandfathered in. Factory plants that were built before the 1970s were exempted from the new Clean Air Act standards because there was an expectation that since they were already old they would retire soon. Unfortunately, this was not the case and many of the plants grandfathered in are the ones continually polluting the air the most with its large amounts of acid rain to the atmosphere without being penalized. The acid rain is the result from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen emissions from fossil fuel burning plants. When these substances leave the earth they return as acid rain and harm water streams, national parks, and human health. Many people argue that these unregulated plants are large contributors to human health issues. “Within the power plant sector, these grandfathered plants generate 52 percent of the country's energy, yet produce 97 percent of the acid rain- and haze-causing sulfur dioxide, 85 percent of the ozone smog-causing nitrogen oxide and 99 percent of toxic mercury pollution from the utility sector”(Birdsong, 2000). After many years the federal government took action and implemented changes to the factories regulations grandfathered in by creating “The New Source Review” in where old factories were considered new sources if they expanded or modified their equipment (Save Clean Air Act, 2005). People believe that if grandfathered plants were ordered to follow the CCA standards as all other plants there would be a much more positive effect on air quality (Birdson, 2000).
Earning an associate’s degree can be a decent initial step into the field. It permits you to enter the workforce sooner and rapidly learn entry-level job duties. Right now, around 20 universities offer veterinary technology programs that are longer and that finish in a 4-year four-year college education in veterinary technology. These 4-year universities, in addition to some professional schools, also offer 2-year programs in laboratory animal science. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are nine schools that offer veterinary technology courses through distance learning. The school would need to be authorize by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Each State directs veterinary technicians and technologists in an unexpected way; in any case, most States oblige them to pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) managed by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. As more experience is picked up, technologists and technicians assume on greater liability and do more assignments with little veterinary
When most people think about what is wrong with the environment, they can think of many things wrong with it. The amount of pollution that has either enter the air, land, or the ground. The amount of pollution within the air has been constantly been caused by humans doing a lot of activities that release a lot of carbon emissions. Activities such as deforestation of trees, the uses of automotive cars, and factories producing so much smog on a daily basis. With all of these activities, much of the air quality is poor and can cause many health problems for humans. As stated EPA, “Breathing polluted air can make your eyes and nose burn. It can irritate your throat and make breathing difficult” (EPA 4).
My intern shadowing experience at ASPIRE, has made me even more excited about my internship position there this coming spring. After shadowing, I still believe that my HDFS classes and work experience has thoroughly prepared me for this internship, and mental stamina it requires. Through this shadowing experience I was able to witness and play a small active role in the ASPIRE clinics intern’s daily duties. I learned that my primary responsibility as an ASPIRE intern will be to help with the daily running and upkeep of the Aspire Clinic. This will include administrative tasks, answering phones, making appointments, communicating with clients, filing & organizational tasks, and supporting the staff at ASPIRE.
My next experience occurred when I shadowed at West Villa Maria Veterinary Clinic, a small mixed practice with only two doctors. The contrast between this and a larger clinic at which I shadowed concurrently was very instructive for me. I observed the close relationships that Dr. Baggs at Villa Maria had with his clients and saw how this aided his ability to treat his patients. I fell in love with the idea of a small-town clinic where this level of familiarity would be
According to World WildLife Fund, many ecosystems around the world are being destroyed, eliminating many plant and animal species that inhabit them (“Pollution”). 2. And acid rain, which is created when water in the atmosphere mixes with chemicals, ravage through rain forests and can even kill fish. 3.
Pollutants are the key elements of pollution, which are generally waste materials of dissimilar forms. Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance of the environment. With innovation and development in our lives pollution has reached its peaks giving rise to global warming and human illness. When raw materials, water, energy and other resources are utilized more efficiently, when fewer harmful substances are substituted for hazardous ones, and when lethal substances are eliminated from the production process. Water pollution is also a major problem in the world because almost 60% of it is fish.
One of the problems facing our world is population. It began about ten thousand years ago when the humans settled and began farming. The farming provides more food for the people thus making the population grow. Now we are about 6 billion in population and in a few years we will be around 10 to 11 billion. Therefore, our population will almost double in size. This means that we will need more food to support us. A study in 1986 by Peter Vitonesk, a Stanford biologist, showed that the humans are already consuming about 38.8 of what is possible for us to eat. Thus, if the population keeps increasing, the percentage will increase also, making us closer and closer to the biophysical limits. By studying the earth's capacity, Dr. Cornell, another biologist, believes that we are already crowded for this would. He believes that our world can only support two million people. Not only this, but population can cause complicated problems to the countries with very high population. These countries will need more schools to educate its people, they will need more hospitals and public health to take care of their people, and they will need more water and more soil for farming to feed all the people. In order to solve the population growth problem, the people should be educated. Once the people are educated they will be aware of the problems they ca...
