America has been the prime example of freedom for many years. It has been the symbol of adventure, self-advancement, and growth. However, American freedom has been stretched to fit into many different categories. There is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to plan parenthood, and now, in Colorado and Washington, freedom to buy and sell marijuana. America has fought the war on drugs for decades. Legalizing marijuana is now seen as an “experiment” that may turn out to be beneficial for the nation. Yet, drugs are never something to be experimented with and drugs will never be beneficial. Drugs should never be legalized; they are not healthy for the body, they affect the birth process, they influence youth in a negative manner, and they increase crime and tragedy. Drug use is not healthy for the body because it not only affects the user, but that person’s potential spouse and children. Drugs have a long-term affect on the body, causing illnesses that can last a long time. “…because of their intoxicating effect on the brain, damaging impact on the body, adverse impact on behavior, and potential for abuse. Their use threatens the health…of users and nonusers alike” (Hartnett #4). Other such illnesses are cancer and heart disease these illnesses can be fatal and have caused a number of deaths. If one does not incur an illness, their child may due to the parent’s drug abuse. Drugs can affect even the unborn baby. They can change the very structure of a man’s sperm, causing him to become sterile or give an egg a diseased sperm. “A pregnant woman who regularly smokes marijuana or hashish may/could give birth prematurely to an undersized, underweight baby,”– (Drug-Free World #1). Yet, just as their thirst for drugs can’t be quenched, neither can the drug cartel’s thirst for money can be quenched. As Americans, the choice will have to be made. A generation is more important than satisfying the people’s addiction. Drugs destroy communities and enslave people. America will to be responsible for enslaving an entire generation. Youth must be seen as the victims of this “experimentation” or else the danger of drugs will not be seen. Life has become so valueless, that drugs are going be sold, no matter how it affects a person. It is easy to sell an item, even if it hurts millions and kills more. Yet, it isn’t easy to sell a person to their death. That is what the legalization of drugs will do, and that is why it must be stopped.
