Homelessness is a very serious issue, not just in our nation, but also across the world.
Many people think those that are homeless are criminals or druggies. Of course some people went homeless for such reasons; however, homeless people can also be the most caring, gentle, and loving people you’ll ever meet. As a country, we should come together to take care of those who are homeless. Homelessness is defined, as “the lack of residential shelter or the prevalence of that lack within a population”, by author Joseph M. Palmisano. Those who are homeless may group together in areas and set up their tents, but many times they’re on their own. The usual thought of a homeless person is a man that’s in his 40’s or 50’s. There is no sure fire way of telling exactly how many people in our own country are actually homeless. According to author Sheldon Brown, “[nearly] 2 million are homeless during the course of a year”. This is a statistic that we need to change. It’s a heartbreaking realistic that so many people in our country have to go through this. On any night across the U.S., “It is estimated that 750,000 Americans” (Brown) are homeless, sleeping anywhere they can find a place to lay down such as “subway caves, empty buildings, public areas” (Brown). It is also estimated that “one in 50 American children are homeless”, author Christine Vestal quoted.
Between the years 2007 and 2009, there was “a 39 percent increase” (Vestal) in the number of homeless people. If our government chose to spend the money that they send over seas on our own people, we could afford to house every American.
