What comes in mind when you hear of free college tuition? It’s a question that is more relevant in today’s society than ever before. Many people have different, passionate opinions on this topic. College affordability is a big concern when it comes to money on education. About a century ago high school public schools became a necessity, not a luxury. In today days this is happening to colleges. If college is an important essential for creating a career and presenting a full participant in our nation and building a democracy as high school once was, shouldn’t college be free? Due to the help of more working educated students with at least basic degree. The government would be spending that money for students and the country as a whole future. That money would create a more educated country. Future lawyers, doctors, nurses and other important professions that will help our country would create better American life. “Berea College in Kentucky, a small, private liberal art college, is a tuition free for all students-and has been that way sense 1892” (Williams). This being said, shows that there is an opportunity of free college in America. Free college in Berea’s college was achieved by Berea’s model. It is one of seven work colleges in the United States, that designed an investment program that require student labor at college campus. “These positions range from grounds keeping and housekeeping to staffing departmental and administrative offices, including more advanced positions like teaching assistantships which make students competitive for graduate school” (Williams). By providing jobs that are held in campus will help both students and the college itself. This provides college hard working students that work to achieve what they want and also gaining back the money that they are spending on students. “Berea has a working farm which provides students interested in sustainable agriculture and natural resource stewardship valuable hands-on experiences” (Williams). This means that will help Berea College financially that will help reduce operating and administrative cost by employing students instead of staff members.
