In November 1944, the term “vegan” was coined by Donald Watson. He wanted to create this term because even though vegetarians do not eat meat, they still eat dairy and eggs. He wanted “vegan” be the term to describe the people who did not consume meat, eggs, or dairy. Today, vegan is used to describe a diet or lifestyle that does not include any animal products in general. A diet without meat, dairy, eggs, or any other animals products is argued on whether or not it is a sustainable and healthy way of living.
Like many things in life, there are people who believe in and support the vegan diet for an everyday lifestyle, along with people who are against vegan diets and do not think this is a healthy or sustainable diet plan for everyday life. …show more content…

Vegans have higher intakes of fruits and vegetables compared to non vegans, which causes them to have higher intake of vitamin C. Vitamin may help prevent or impede the development of certain cancers, such as heart disease, or other diseases where oxidative stress plays an occasional role. The reasonable intake of vitamin C per day is around one hundred thirty to one hundred eighty milligrams, at that amount seventy to ninety percent of the vitamin C is absorbed by the body. Intakes that are above one gram per day are expelled with urine, because the body only able to absorb less than fifty percent of it. Another advantage to a vegan diet in children is, they are exposed to a wide variety of whole plant foods during their childhood which helps them establish good eating habits that will be beneficial to their health throughout their life. Some disadvantages of a vegan diet in children are that the diet can be too restrictive and cause issues with growth and development if it is not planned well. Also, there is some concern that a vegan diet may have a potential to mask eating disorders in the future of that child’s life. Studies that have been done with the American Dietetic Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the British Dietetic Association also show that vegans have average intakes of protein, fiber, iron, and other vitamins and
