Picture this, you are driving down the road and you put your turn sign on. You begin to turn the car and then all of a sudden ou airbags blow up while your head jerks towards it and the glass from the windows shatter all over your car.You car spins and our tires skid across the road. You get out of your car and a teenager gets out, but not a normal teenager, drunk one. Drinking and driving is still a problem for teenagers. One reason that drinking and driving is still a problem for teenagers is that drinking and driving does not allow teenagers to fully learn responsibility. Another reason drinking and driving is still a problem is because when you drink and drive you are putting you life and others’ lives at risk. One reason drinking and driving is a problem for teenagersis because when you drink and drive you are putting yourself in danger. There are at least 5,000 deaths of people under twenty-one each year. An example that proves my claim is that 40% of al 10th graders drink alcohol which does not show maturity and responsibility. Not being responsible is a risk when you drink and drive because when you don’t have any consequences to your wrong doings you keep doing it and think that it is okay to do. Over 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving occur a day but only about 3,200 drivers are srrested. That means that the other 296,800 drunk drivers didn’t caught and will most likely drink and drive again. It only takes that one drink to be intoxicated and they're driving ability is not the best, going back home from the party. Teens do not think twice of what danger they are putting them or others in, when they get into the car. Either it be death or a life changing event. Teens who drink not only risk hurting themselves, they risk hurting their friends, family, and even strangers when driving intoxicated. Teens and parents both need a strong reminder that underage drinking is illegal and can have disastrous consequences. According to Health Day News, “one study found that in 2011, 36 percent of U.S. college students said they'd gone binge drinking (five or more drinks in one sitting) within the past two weeks, as compared to 43 percent of college students in 1988. According to Andrew Herman, “Each year, 14,000 die from drinking too much. 600,000 are victims of alcohol related physical assault and 17,000 are a result of drunken driving deaths, many being innocent bystanders” (470). These massive numbers bring about an important realization: alcohol is a huge issue in America today. Although the problem is evident in Americans of all ages, the biggest issue is present in young adults and teens. In fact, teens begin to feel the effects of alcohol twice as fast as adults and are more likely to participate in “binge-drinking” (Sullivan 473). The problem is evident, but the solution may be simple. Although opponents argue lowering the drinking age could make alcohol available to some teens not mature enough to handle it, lowering the drinking age actually teaches responsibility and safety in young adults, maintains consistency in age laws, and diminishes temptation.

Today's laws are not what they should be to prevent teens from engaging in underage drinking. The laws are not cutting down on the number of deaths that occur because alcohol is involved or domestic disturbances. All of these problems could be prevented if only the laws were strong enough and the punishments were actual punishments. For instance if a teen is caught with a fake license all that is done is they cut up the ID and place a small fine on them. In most cases the parents pay the tickets so the teen gets nothing out of the punishment. So how is this showing the teen to be responsible and not drink? If the punishment is too easy they won't get anything out of it and just keep drinking because they know that even if they do get caught the punishment is really easy.
