In recent years, a discussion regarding education has increasingly emphasized teachers’ role in promoting student academic growth through personalism. Phillippo explains personalism as, policies that ask teachers’ to develop individual relationship with students at a professional level for student achievement (Phillippo, p. 441). Urban school districts have promoted these policies by converting large schools into smaller schools. Research on student-teacher relationships for the most part support policies of personalism (Phillippo, p. 441). Students who have a professional relationship with their teachers tend to be more successful in school. My experience as an instructional aide has helped me put into practice policies of personalism. Part of my job is assisting the student in class as well as outside of class. I like to make myself available to other students when they need it. Over the years I have worked with students on a one to one level at lunch, during my prep periods, or after school. I definetley feel that I am able to carry those policies of personalism into the elementary level. Just recently I was given an opportunity to work with 5th graders at the learning center on campus. Working with upperl-level elementary students is much different that high school students. The most rewarding feedback I received from my supervior was that I had established a good relationship with my students and he can see it through his observations. He mentioned that the students’ responded well to me in the classroom and enjoyed being around me. Being that these students were much younger my interaction with them was much different. For example, in the classroom it was as simply as kneeling down by their desk to come at their eye level when they had a question for me. Every week when they would arrive I would enjoy hearing all their funny stories and asking them about their week or how they were
