Personal Statement: Sustainable Living At Ohio University

My belief is that sustainable living means reducing the demand on natural resources in order to not only preserve but promote the health and wellbeing of our earth for the life that exists on it today and for the life that will exist in the future generations to come. To me, that means modifying my lifestyle, starting with my day-to-day cup of coffee in the morning to brushing my teeth before I go to bed at night with respect to my relationship with the earth’s natural cycles and ecology.
In becoming a member of this community here at Ohio University, I hope to bring my own experiences in personal sustainability to others in an effort to improve the efforts of our community as a whole in living a more sustainable and eco-centric lifestyle. …show more content…

Furthermore, I have been working towards living a minimalistic zero waste lifestyle. When I first began to transition into a vegetarian diet it was difficult to find nutritional alternatives to the foods that I was used to eating. Moreover, adopting a minimalistic lifestyle was daunting in the early stages. It was difficult for me to determine if I truly needed some of the things that I viewed as necessities. Personally, the journey towards minimalism has been more life-changing and rewarding than I initially expected. Likewise, a vegetarian diet proved to be a beneficial change in my life that I continue to follow today. Working towards minimizing the amount of waste I produce and my demand on natural resources of the earth has changed the way I think about the world and how we each interact with it. Coming to college for the first time, I was nervous that this new change along with my current waste reduction endeavors would prove to be too much to handle. But, as I began to acquaint myself with the dining halls and the various ways that I can become involved in creating a more sustainable campus, it became increasingly clear that I did not have to compromise my hard work. I hope to bring this very same realization to other students on campus and help others understand that it is not only uncomplicated but rewarding to cut down on your own waste
