A passion that I've always had is to genuinely care and help others. Whether that was lending a hand or even just helping my mom do the dishes. Being service oriented is a quality that I've always cherished. From a young age, I knew that when I grew up I wanted to have the opportunity to expand health care and have an impact on a person’s life, that is Dentistry. Although, there are many other health professions that also provide care, what drove me to choose Dentistry is its flexibility and your ability to be original, innovative and provide care the way you wish is best. The neighborhood I live in, which is in the Bronx motivates me to pursue Dentistry. Another factor that has led me to pursue dentistry as a career are my parents. As cliché, as it sounds the struggles that my parents went through to provide my brothers and me with the best life possible, led me to appreciate and take advantage of the opportunity I’m given to someday make a difference. One hardship was when my father was in the military in Venezuela and lost several of his tooth’s. Watching him struggle for years trying to attain affordable implants that would allow him to have confidence and speak clearly, encouraged me to someday become a dentist to provide not only my dad but others the dental service they so longed for. After being lost, puzzled, and indecisive for a while now about which health-related career I desire the most, I finally made up my mind and selected a major. I decided to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science after accomplishing an Associate’s Degree in Science, which is an open field filled with opportunities for several health professions. I realized that a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science is the way to go as it enables me to switch back and forth between all of the health occupations that I worship. Down the road, I can even further my education and specialize in a specific domain that I am willing to commit to. In general, Health Science is a major where professionals undergo several tasks such as improving their community’s health and overall wellbeing, get involved in nutrition related conditions, use epidemiological techniques, counteract various infections, and enrich physical and daily health routines.
When I was a child, I looked at a mirror one day, and I was amazed by the fact that I was aware of my eyes looking at my face. It was a moment of epiphany for me that I was conscious of my senses working properly.
Upon enrolling at Texas State Technical College, I met some amazing professors who really inspired me to go for with my dreams of becoming a dentist. Even after expressing my fear of failure because I had a child, they assured me that I had it in me to do it. I had no idea how much work it would take to get to where wanted to be, but I knew that this was the career for me. It felt so good to finally know my purpose in life. Before actually starting my prerequisite for dental school my main motivation for going into dental school was to help people and I had a genuine interested in all the new technology. All the new advancements in technology that the dental industry as a whole had offered definitely reeled me in. I didn 't really know what I was getting myself into or how much dentistry has to offer until I actually started working as a dental assistant. All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
I believe this career matches me because for one I love being around people and I love helping others when they are in need meaning I can help them with better teeth I can take them out of pain I can give them a better smile then they had before. Growing up I can’t say I ever knew right off the bat I wanted to work in the dental industry. I wanted to be a soccer player or an artist of some sort. I have a very big extended family with awesome careers. Which kind of got me thinking, what do I really want to do? Two of my uncles and one of my cousins are dentists. So of course they were talking to me a lot suggesting the dental field.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. Nursing has been a long time childhood dream. Some may choose nursing for so many other reasons, for me nursing is my passion and I believe I have a caring personality which is a key point of nursing. Coming from a country that had been in a civil war for long since I was a little child, and growing up in that kind of situation, seeing everyday people die for even minor things because of no doctors or nurses available, left me with deep sadness and wanting to make difference in the lives of so who are in need. This experience had planted in mea caring natures that I want to make use of it. Coming to America has made my dream of becoming a nurse come true. I was able go to college while having a family as well. I have always admired what nurses do for their patients. Doctors only see patients for few minutes but nurses stay with patients 24, 7 therefore; physicians only make diagnosis while nurses heal the patient.
I chose to become a dentist as being a child I had to visit a dentist many times for correction of malaligned teeth that i had. So my dentist who was also a specialist in the field of orthodontics inspired me deeply as it gave me a vague idea of how can i also bring smile and self confidence back to an individual by providing him with a competent smile again by incorporating the blend of my hand creativity and mental alertness, same as my dentist did for me thus returning me my self esteem and the confidence to smile again .Thus i found this field very satisfying and fulfilling.
I feel that my love for arts, such as painting, sketching, sewing, and playing the piano will help to make me a great dentist, as these hobbies have helped to perfect my fine motor skills. Additionally, my love for the sciences led me to join a research project where I studied the teeth of mice infected with periodontal disease. I found it inspiring to be able to concentrate on an area of academia – oral health – that is of interest to me. This research project also motivated me even more to pursue dentistry in order to help treat such a common oral health ailment such as periodontal disease. Several factors contributed to my pursuit of a career nursing, but the main reason I decided on this profession was my family. The medical field has held my interest since a young age, considering my mom has always worked in healthcare, so I was exposed to the field at a very early age. For many years I juggled with the idea of becoming a doctor or a veterinarian, not quite being able to decide which field in healthcare interested me the most, but in recent years I narrowed the interest I developed at a young age down to a profession in nursing. It was only after a discussion with my great-aunt that I decided to pursue nursing. My great-aunt made nursing her profession many years ago, and at family gatherings, she would often tell me fascinating stories about her time spent working in a hospital.
