I am passionate about helping people. I have been tutoring students, performed volunteer work, and community service. All of these people that I have helped over the years satisfies me immensely. However, I would like the chance to help people in a medical setting. I would like to help those who are diagnosed with a mental illness. I would like to help reduce the stress that comes with living with a mental disorder. I feel that it is important to give back to the community and help individuals who are struggling and have trouble coping with a mental illness. That is one of the reasons I would like to work in clinical mental health field. As a mental health counselor, I will be able to help those diagnosed with mental illness live better and happier lives. Living with a mental disorder is not easy and can be stressful to not only to the individuals but their families. Giving these people the proper support and treatment can help them manage better. However in order for me to do this, I would need to attend a graduate program and hold a masters degree in mental health counseling. During my studies in this program I would like to fully understand mental illness from all perspectives – biological, …show more content…
I am also looking forward to learning the skills of writing a professional report of diagnosis and treatment. During the program I plan on applying my knowledge through clinical work in a practicum and internship. I expect to practice the skills and techniques taught while working with clients and in real situations. I am prepared to spend long hours required of this program working to get the learning experience of the field work. In my internship I hope to explore and study areas of interest and specialization. While training I would like to find my role as mental health
This paper will discuss four potential persons I might become. I see myself most strongly becoming a Peer Specialist. The role of a Peer Specialist is very important in helping people suffering from mental illnesses to accept, educate, cope and advocate for themselves to bring down the barriers that have been a stereotypical thorn in their sides’ mainly through a social disease called discrimination. This discrimination is basically society’s lack of understanding the world of the mentally disturbed.
Many graduate nurses will seek jobs in traditional medical settings. Theses settings can include the emergency department, long-term care, outpatient clinics, medical-surgical inpatient floors and intensive care units. Graduate nurses must remember that they will at some point encounter a patient that is also diagnosed with a mental illness in any of these settings. It is imperative that the nurse feel competent in his or her ability to asses and treat these patients. The gradua...
I took and abnormal psychology class where we briefly went over each mental disorder but I would like to be able to go more in depth. During my time in this class we did several case studies, where I learned to diagnose different clients and give possible treatments. I would like to go beyond this method and learn more as I get more into clinical psychology.
I will begin with what I remember of my experience of learning I have mental health illness. I remember suffering heavily through my early teens to my twenties with depression. I had tried at that time just about every type of depression medication available and none of them worked on me. It wasn't until I was in my twenties that my depression just kind of went away. I thought I was done with suffering from mental health problems, but I would be wrong.
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.
I can understand that it will be many challenges in the future since Mental Health counseling is a challenge all by itself because you are learning every day, and everyone owns a different personality and each day it will always something different that you will hold to tackle so in saying all of this you have to use up one day at a time. Don’t burn yourself out, attain sure you take care of yourself at the indigence of the day and don’t think you are more serious than the adjacent individual. And always listen before
Health and Human Service Professionals can work in a variety of work settings. They can work with children, adults, elderly, or work with people who have substance abuse issues. I recently discovered that Human services fall under two different careers. Human service professionals can focus on either career they prefer. Social Services is one; this career focuses on improving the quality of life for clients. This is a career that emphases on helping others. The second focus is a Mental Health Specialist focus. Mental Health Specialist work directly with people who are trying to change their behavior or achieve a better mental health outlook. Those who are interested in working as a mental health counselor must obtain
Mental health nurses, also called psychiatric nurses, provide support and care to people with emotional and mental disorders.” (Career Cruising) Depending on where people choose to work in mental health nursing, the duties vary; many have common goals for themselves, and their patients. “The nurses try to keep their patients safe, help them adjust to their environment, and as much as possible, help them regain their mental health. Nurses do all these things by observing, assessing, and reporting on their patients’ conditions, and by providing therapeutic care and treatment to the patients.”
My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
This course has highlighted many attributes and challenges within psychology and its many subfields. Within the weekly research of the psychological subfields I was able to learn the impact of education and its effect on the psychological profession. Along with the applied aspect of psychology listening to the online resource psychfiles, I have uncovered information that has solidified my goal of becoming an art therapist Masters degree. My focus will always be to provide mental health assistance to veterans as that is where my satisfaction and reward will fill in for the low entry-level salary.
There are hundreds of different careers in the medical field ranging from neurosurgeons to nurse practitioners. Psychiatry deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional ailments. The main purpose of a psychiatrist is to help people coop with issues and stress in their environment that make it difficult to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle. These issues may arise from abuse, addiction, mental disability, disease, or physical injury. It is the psychiatrist’s job to ensure the patient can maintain a healthy attitude and continue to provide for themselves. A Psychiatrist may choose to specialize in many sub classes of mental health including children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, addiction, and pain management. While requiring an intense and difficult education, the occupation in psychiatry is one that offers meaningful, fulfilling work and a high-end salary.
A mental health counselor develops a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health and career goals. Helping others to accomplish their goals and listening to various stories of hardship have always played a part in my life. Stories of others have helped me get through rough times, and so did my own personal stories do the same for others. My story may help save a life tomorrow. It is a rewarding career path that one may enjoy which requires excellent communication skills and a commit between each other.
Ever since I was in middle school I was fascinated by the world of psychology. The thought of being able to get into someone’s mind by merely speaking them through it intrigued me terribly and I was just so amazed by all of the different areas of it I didn’t know for a couple of years what I wanted to do in that field specifically, but I knew I was meant to be a psychologist of some sorts. I knew I was meant to help people with their mental issues and illnesses in the way I was helped which eventually led me to clinical psychology. “Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior and psychiatric problems.” (Cherry, Kendra. "Clinical Psychology - What Is Clinical Psychology”) To sum it up, a clinical psychologist is someone who diagnoses people to help them find out what issue they have mentally; like how a doctor would diagnose a patient with a physical disease I would be helping a patient with their mental ailment. To do this I will have to go through many years of schooling but I know in the end it will be worth it if I can have a worthwhile career such as this one.
I would love the opportunity to study nursing as I feel that it will lead me down one of the most demanding and fulfilling career paths. My ambition is to become a mental health nursing due to my own minor issues with anxiety and the fact that a number of my friends and family members have also had mental health issues throughout their life's and this has given me a better understanding of how mental health issues can affect people and has allowed me to realise that your mental health is just as important as your physical health. One in four people will suffer with a mental health problem at some point in their lives and I would love the opportunity to help people during such difficult times in order to enable them to get there lives back on
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. Either way, I feel like I will be doing a great thing. As a professional, I want to help many people with their problems. I will encourage their opinions and ideas as well as help them form plans to better their
