Personal Statement: A Career As A Construction Civil Engineering

The turn point in my career occurred during a conversation with my 10 year old niece about my profession as a construction civil engineer. I was passionate to talk about my career and my role in building skyscrapers, tall office buildings and residential towers. Her innocent comment that engineers replace the green nature with concrete buildings came shocking to me and left me wondering about my role as an engineer in developing environmental friendly constructions and preserving our natural environment. My decision to pursue a Ph.D. in “Infrastructure And Environmental Systems” is my quest for solutions regarding the growing environmental impact resulting from construction field without neglecting the economical challenges. Such a degree will enable me to contribute to my country by introducing the concept of sustainable development; the development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own.
During my enrollment at the Lebanese university, I had the opportunity to get exposed to a full range of engineering courses that enhanced my abilities in designing systems with realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, manufacturability and sustainability. Applying theory to real life projects at the end of each course has strengthened my skills in analysis, data interpretation and understanding the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context. These projects have been enjoyable and enlightening, providing me with a new and different perspective on the world in which we live.
