Solar Boat Project Essay

For Mechanical system design the project was to make a solar boat which we did successfully. Through this project I have learnt a lot about the designing and as well as about the boats. It also gave a briefing on product development process and the stages of design. Furthermore, it also helped me with the skills of project management and working in team which is very useful.

The design was conducted as a group. Though, it can be done independently but the concepts and styles will be restricted because as a personal you may not come up with the best solution as compared to group. As a group, many different types of concepts and techniques were presented because each one comes from a different background and has an exclusive design of creativeness.

Through this unit I gained the knowledge about the design process. This unit Mechanical System Design helped me a lot to learn new things which are very useful. For Solar Boat project I have taken help from online such as journals, articles, and books and some more the solar boat projects from the past years. We had to plan the group meetings and also make a Gantt chart to show our progress during the completion of the project. This project provided a more practical approach to this design. I gained some valuable experience as a student on design engineering and it really appeals me to learn more about

We are assigned a task and a time was given to present it. Being as an engineering student the practical work which we will do will make us learn more and we will get to know how we can improve in future. The more we will do practice the better the result will be. During the competition we all saw that winner of the boat racing has good design and did spent some time to make it work more efficient. Apart from that it was observed the sun has major role in happening of the race.. Some groups they had a superb design of the boat but unfortunately couldn’t perform well at the time of competition due to the sunlight issue because it depends on the solar panel connection too how are we going to connect it either in series of parallel. It was noticed that parallel connections were more useful in racing than series connection. We unfortunately couldn’t done boat testing because of assembling of the boat parts finished a bit late due to delay from group members and when it was completed there wasn’t enough sunlight which can provide us testing. Adjusting the coupling and shaft angle give us some bit of trouble but it was later adjusted and boat performed
