Personal Narrative: My Trip To The AMC Theater

Lights, Camera, Action! No matter what the age, it is girl’s dream to someday here these three words, and begin shooting her perfectly imagined movie. Similarly, as a young girl I often felt the need to make a weekly visit to the movie theater, and see my heros in action. “I have to see this movie”, I would plead. After a long hour of whining,which often included a temper tantrum, my mother would reluctantly agree. Somehow, the minute I entered the theater, I felt as if a spell had been cast upon me. A spell which led me to be in awe of the dim lights, bright red carpet,and the many movie posters surrounding me. I was no longer in my world of reality and practicality, but in a world of dreams. Over the next hour, the line grew full of people. Their eyes simply focused on one thing, the thick, black front doors of the AMC Theater. In contrast to my experiences at this very theater as an infant, I noticed that rather than hearing the sound of joyous giggling and excitement, I heard the shrill, high-pitched ringing of cell phones. About five minutes later, there was pin drop silence, as everyone fixated on the much awaited theater employee opening the doors of the theater. To my surprise, within seconds the crowd began sprinting their way into the theater, as if they were racing for survival, or in this case the best seats. Rather than being courteous to those ahead of them, the many families sprinted across the hall in a stampede. As I took my seat , I watched as the rows ahead of me filled within the next five seconds. I was stunned, as I saw each member of the crowd violently place themselves onto their seats. Instantly, I observed a number of adults throwing their jackets off to the side, in order to save seats for others. “ You stole our seats”, I heard one argue. After a lengthy series of many such disputes, the crowd became silent, taking out their smartphones from their pockets. Why was it that ten years ago everyone was so much more relaxed and disengaged from their outside lives? The answer is, social media. Due to the increase of our technology, the use of social media has certainly skyrocketed over the years. In addition, the development of smart phones has caused individuals to have easier access to social media throughout their daily lives. It has not only impacted the communication skills of growing children, but also their day to day thoughts. Although Television and Magazines are often blamed for causing people to question themselves regarding their physical looks, social media plays an influential role on the stereotype of “the perfect lifestyle” as well. Through the sharing of images on social media websites, many begin to question their aspects of their own lives, especially their social lives. By being informed on the momentous events taking place in the lives of others, many begin to feel as if their lives must be approved by the society around them. For this reason, we capture our own life events through social media, and observe the lives of others. This makes it evident that the social media industry is driven by none other than competition of having “the perfect
