Back in High School I could not even see myself pursuing any goals that I had set. I got pregnant at sixteen, and decided to drop out of school so I could work full-time to support my family. Needless to say, my mom was not happy. She had worked so hard for my future. I realized the only way to ensure my family’s future was through higher education. Knowing that was the key factor to happiness I enrolled at SCALE (an adult program from Somerville High School). Currently I have a rewarding job working in a Day Care for Catholic Charities. I help kids learn about the world through play. For me, that has been about as close to “right livelihood” as I have ever enjoyed.
When I went back to college last year, it was for the purpose of furthering my education. My plan was to get an associate degree in Early Childhood Education then proceed to a Bachelor’s degree. Along the way, something unexpected happened. While studying Child Growth and Development, I was struck by the biological-maturational theory of Arnold Gesell and Jean Piaget’s cognitive-developmental theory. But the urge didn’t go away. Rather, I found myself at work, clicking back to the TUFTS website for just another peek. Even though a few months had passed since the first click on the TUFTS website, it was now or never.
Now I have gratefully accepted that this is what I want to do. It’s what I have to do. It’s what I choose to do. What a joy to have something in my life that makes me feel so engaged, so passionate, so alive! It is so important that I will give up my security; I will give up my current way of being to plunge into this Sea of Uncertainty. Where will I end up? I don’t know. For now, I’m secure in the belief that it’s the journey, not the destination. And so here I am knocking on your door and asking you to invite me to join
