It was around 10 o’clock on a Friday night. I was home alone, because my parents and my brother had all made plans to go out with their friends or small groups. I had elected to make it a lazy evening, where I would lay on the couch and watch TV, all while being tightly wrapped in a few blankets to keep warm. I may have dozed off for a few minutes, and when I awoke, it had begun raining quite hard. In fact, there was thunder and lightning, and a few moments of hail. The sound of the driving rain against the house lulled me back to sleep. I was awakened again a few minutes later by my parents walking in the front door. “We’re home Tom!” mom said. “Hey mom, hey dad. How was your home group?” I said slightly startled and very groggily. “It was good. Just the same old same old.” dad said. “Where’s your brother?” “Not home yet. It’s just me and ol’ Cooley holding down the homestead. Speaking of which, did you guys let him inside when you came in? I took him out a couple of minutes ago, and he hasn’t barked or anything.” “You let him out in that storm? No, he didn’t come inside with us. I’ll go check the other doors to see if he’s there.” mom said as she walked out of the living room. “I don’t see Cooley anywhere. His car was parked in the driveway, but it was covered with a tarp. The tarp was also covering something else, but I couldn’t tell what it was from where I stood. I decided to sneak up closer, all the way to the car. I lifted up part of the tarp, revealing an anti-freeze jug, with a bowl of liquid next to it. “That’s it!
