Throughout all of my years in high school, as I took all of the required A-G classes, I learned many things. I learned about communication, not only in English, but Spanish as well. I learned how to hold a conversation with a Spanish-speaking person and I also learned how to write and read in the language. In both English and Spanish, I learned how to communicate my thoughts, ideas and information in a formal and eloquent form. Ever since I can remember, my parents taught me how to speak fluent Spanish and it was one of their main priorities. At home my parents only allowed me to speak Spanish, but at school I would have to speak fluent English. My parents wanted to make sure that I did not forget my roots, culture, and language because they knew it would benefit me in the future. I took my first Spanish class in 8th grade because I knew a foreign language credit was required for an advanced diploma, but I had no clue how useful the language would become. Waynesboro is a very diverse city and being bilingual has many advantages. After completing Spanish IV in 10th grade, I was nearly fluent in the language because I used it daily on the soccer field with my nine Hispanic teammates. This especially came in handy when competing against teams with no Spanish speakers. Fast forward two years to today, and I still have the conversational aspects of the language engrained in my brain. My achievement of becoming literate in both English and Spanish, after overcoming a myriad of obstacles distinguishes my literacy history. Writing was one of the things I didn’t like to do as a child. I always thought writing was a waste of time and that I wasn’t going to need it in life. Even though I didn’t invest much time writing, I was one of the best writers in all my classes, probably because I was very dedicated in the other subjects and I loved reading adventure books. I learned how to read and write by the age of four, since in my native country “the Dominican Republic”, kids are enrolled in school at the age of three; usually parents start their child’s education at home before that age.
However, extra academic courses helped expand my knowledge in these areas. I was able to take Phycology and Sociology, in High school. The study of why people do what they do really intrigued me because I was nothing like my siblings. Phycology and Sociology expanded my vocabulary and literacies. I looked at history from a different perspective, which interested me. It also introduced me to humanities courses. I pretty much skated by in my English classes. The books we read, I had no interest in, and I did not feel like I was getting anything out of my classes. This was until my senior year. My English teacher taught us how to read. I do not mean the words, but the content. Different methods of active reading, and note taking helped me have a deeper understanding of the content I was reading. The shift in instruction which was historically influenced helped me progress in my literacies (Panther, 2015, presentation). I could relate to the novels we were reading. Coming from Mexico and having to be able to adapt to a new language where los acentos are not needed, and some words that sound the same but are totally spelled differently. Like for example when I was writing my notes for my Spanish class I wanted to write "de," but I would write "the," and up to this day I still make that mistake sometimes Remembering the struggle and the costume to want to write photo with and f like foto. Telling my parent to -"put the papers on the carpet.," thinking that carpeta and carpet are the same because the spelling is close to the same. Buying a lot of book from Family Dollar and Dollar General and trying to connect the word with the image, and connecting the whole story together. The language is the first material that everyone has to learn when coming to a new country. Without it, I would not have been able to progresar here in the United States of America.
Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate.

I made it a priority to expand my Spanish vocabulary by reading books and communicating with my family in Spanish more often. I was ecstatic in going back to school because I knew that they had a Spanish elective that was mandatory for all kids going to elementary school. My first experience as a student of CCD was English 092 class. Being bilingual, I was afraid that I would not be able to pass this class, for the reason that I’m not fluent in English. Thoughts, that my classmates would not be able to understand my speech due to my strong accent, and the professor would not be able to grade my assessments by cause of grammar mistakes, didn’t let me sleep well until the middle of the class. Despite my worrying feelings, I was able to prove to myself that I can set goals and achieve them. First of all, my professor Lorenza Lara helped to believe in myself, that everybody can make mistakes, that perfection is achieved by a long way of mistakes and practice. I feel that through my experience of this English class, I have improved my vocabulary, approach to the writing, and increase my confidence in writing skills.
There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
