Personal Essay: My Journey To Become A Doctor

A calling is something someone knows deep down that you are meant to do. The pull is so strong that you are going to make sure it happens no matter how difficult it might seem. Being a physician is not just a future career I hope to have; for me it is a calling. The journey to becoming a physician has been, and continues to be, something I want to take on with my whole being, fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead. My calling to become a doctor stems from a deep passion I have to care for and love others and has developed into wanting to help those that are unable to help themselves, specifically through medicine.
Whether it was caring for my younger brother growing up or listening and giving advice to a friend that was going through a hard time, I wanted to be by their sides, helping them through whatever they were facing. Of course it was something that I loved being able to do, but I thought that everyone wanted to help in this way; I thought it was no less common than a grain of sand on the beach. I certainly did not think I could make a career out of it either. As I grew older and more aware, I was surprised to realize that there was a lack of that genuine care for others in day to day life. If a patient does not have the money to go to a private hospital for specialized care, then he or she will be stuck waiting a day or more in a public hospital. The patient might be unable to even take time to travel and see a specialist that can help fix their problem as taking a day off from work would mean that the whole family is not provided for. This type of scenario did not just break my heart for those that would continue to suffer in pain and poor health, it lit a fire under me to do something about it: I decided to care for those in need and make sure that they are well.
