1. Person-centred counselling according to Carl Rogers is where the the therapy is client centred, uses a non directive approach and puts the client in charge of the therapeutic process. His quote “the good life is a process, not a state of being” (Rogers, 2004 p183-196) was the starting point for my journey into looking at the theory and concept behind this therapeutic approach. Learning outcomes I wish to demonstrate in this text my understanding of the development and function of personality and the process for therapeutic growth towards self- actualisation for the client when using the person centred approach. An inner part that is what the counsellor is experiencing and feeling from the client and an outer part where she communicates this to the client this is described as being transparent where the inner and outer feelings match. Bozarth (1996) on the other hand describes congruence as the vehicle for the counsellor being able to experience empathy and unconditional positive regard towards the client and step into the client’s frame of reference. To be receptive within the frame of reference to the client can allow the counsellor to be more real or intuitive in his responses. My client had suffered a particularly distressing time being hospitalised for mental health issues after a bereavement, when she arrived for each of the sessions she remarked on how difficult it was for her coming back in to the hospital where she had been detained, yet she did attend the sessions.
