When these wars occurred, the Persian Empire was the largest empire the world had seen. They had expanded through Asia, Asia Minor, and parts of North Africa. The Persian Empire’s ruler was King Darius, and he saw Greece as a perfect place to expand his empire. He Invaded a Greek colony called Ionia. Darius asked for tributes, and the Ionians were furious, so they asked the city state of Athens to help them, Athens then sailed to Ionia and defeated the Persians, and they sailed back, shortly after, the Persians returned and crushed the Ionians and destroyed the city of Miletus. This sparked the Persian-Greek Wars as the Persians marched forward into Greece.

The Battle of Marathon was between the Athenians helped by the Plataeans against a Persian army commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The Persians sailed to a harbor near the city state of Marathon, from there, they sent the Persians to march into the plains of Marathon, where the Athenians and Plataeans were blocking the exits of the plains.     The Persian War stemmed from the Ionian Revolt which began in 499 BC. The Ionians became a part of the Persian Empire in 546 BC, but after many years desired to break away from this forced bond.     The Battle of Thermopylae began in 480 BC and was a product of the Greeks attempt help defend the Ionians from the Persians. This irritated the Persian Emperor, Xerxes, because he thought of Greece as a small kingdom that had no place revolting against the Persian Empire. The Athenians sympathized with the Ionians because the Persians had also tried to invade Greece on multiple occasions.
