Creating The Perfect Health Care System What makes a good healthcare system? According to the WHO, “a good health system delivers quality services to all people, when and where they need them. The exact configuration of services varies from country to country, but in all cases requires a robust financing mechanism; a well-trained and adequately paid workforce; reliable information on which to base decisions and policies; well-maintained facilities and logistics to deliver quality medicines and technologies” (“Health systems”, 2017). As nurses, we are part of the healthcare system and as an advocate for our patients, it’s our job to ensure that they receive the best care. We are an advocate for our patients therefore, it is our job to ensure that their concerns and questions are answered. It is our job that our patient receives the best care there is and should be able to receive the care regardless of their financial status and other factors that will hinder them from receiving the care they need. One of the main issues is not the fact a patient does not want to receive health care but that the fear of getting hit with a large medical bill is stopping them from receiving the care they need. Just like what former President Barack Obama said during his presidential campaign, “ I believe the problem is not that folks are trying to avoid getting health care. The problem is they can’t afford it” (as cited in Palfreman, 2008). In the long run, this will only hurt them more and cost the system more in the end. An initial diagnosis can progress to a deadlier complicated one when left untreated or not treated correctly. We have an important role in the system and we have a voice and we should use it to try to create a system where an individual can come to a healthcare setting and leave without worrying about a hefty medical bill and will want to come back for future follow-ups to manage their
