People Are Safer And Healthier Today Than People Were 100 Years Ago

1. Describe some actions that governments have taken to ensure that people are safer and healthier today than people were 100 years ago. What should the government do in our time to ensure that people are safer and healthier in the next 50 years and why?

Over the last 100 years the government has taken action to in order for a safer and healthier today. The first example that I can think of is the many smoking regulations that have come into play. Center for Disease and Prevention states, “Smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in all indoor areas of a venue fully protect nonsmokers from involuntary exposure to SHS indoors”(CDC, 2015). In addition to this the CDC also explains secondhand smoke (SHS) stating, “secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure causes lung cancer and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in nonsmoking adults and children, resulting in an estimated 46,000 heart disease deaths and 3,400 lung cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmoking adults each year”(CDC, 2015) While this is not something that all states have put in to play, it is something that for many of us, it has allowed for a healthier today. Another recent example includes nutrition labels. The FDA states,” The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for assuring that foods sold in the United States are safe, wholesome and properly labeled” (Food Label Guide, 2014). With this law, we are able to easily see the ingredients and nutrition facts for the food we eat. Not only does is the FDA responsible for the Nutrition labels, they also inspect our food to ensure that it is healthy, test our water, and filters to limit the amount of chemicals going into the air to name a few. Overall, smoking and nutrition regulations are a just a few of the things the go...
