Living in the North central California affects how the Pomo tribe lives.
First of all, the Pomo tribe was located in North central California. Another example, the Pomo tribe lived in places that depended on the climate not too hot, not too cold. Pomo tribe lived in small communities of different types. One community was said to have 20 chiefs at a time and the head men lived in one main village. Also, the Pomo tribe lived in several types of shelter. Southeastern pomo used the tule reeds that grew in marshy areas around the Clear Lake to build houses. Last of all, the Pomo spoke 7 Hokan languages including Yakaya, Yokaia, Shanel, Kabinpek, and Gallinmero, and 2 more.

Baskets are made of feathers and beads. A cool fact is, The weapons by the Pomo people included spears, stone ball clubs, knives and bows, and arrows. The sharp points of their weapons and their tools were fashioned from Obsidian. They used spears and basket traps for fishing. For large animals, they used bow and arrows. For smaller animals they used nets. Also, the spears were made out of arrowheads. The women were in charge of the house and sometimes the field. The women also had to cook and skin the animals. The men were in charge of hunting and fishing for food. The hardest responsibility was making war and protecting the village.

The Choctaws in the Southeast were a matrilineal society. Traditionally, women preformed tasks related to domestic life. Among these responsibilities were creating pottery and utensils, food preparation, and planting and harvesting crops. The majority of their diet consisted of agricultural products such as corn, pumpkins, squash, and beans. Women would also accompany men on hunting excursions in order to provide food preparation. After the hunt, women were responsible for transporting the slain animal back to the village for processing of skins, bone, and meat (Carson 1995:495-6).

According to the encyclopedia of Native Americans, the Chinook tribe lived in large rectangular houses with cedar plank walls and sleepy slopes roofs. The people of the Eastern Woodlands made many tools to help them in their everyday lives. They made spears, weirs, nets, bows and arrows, lances, knives, taps, snares and deadfall for hunting. Most of those tools were made of wood or bark and other forest material. Arrowheads were made from chert, or flint, from sedimentary rocks. They were shaped like isosceles triangles, the smallest arrows were used for hunting birds, the bigger ones were to spear bears or deer. Flint knives were often oval, or teardrop shaped. For fishing they made spears, weirs, and nets. They also made canoes from hollowed-out trees to help with fishing in the lakes and streams. The teepees were made out of logs that are covered with deer or buffalo hide. They kill and skin the animal and then let the hide dry , they then placed the logs in a cone shape and covered them with the animal hide. They also lived in structures called long houses which were made of wood. All of these houses together were called villages. They had to make their houses easy to put up and take down so they could so they could leave to avoid anything that might bring harm to them.

The Kiowa’s people were a great warrior culture society that roamed the plains before the arrival of the Europeans. The Kiowa’ Indian tribe formed an alliance with neighboring tribes and dominated the western plains for decades. In their native tongue they called themselves, ” Ka’gwa” which meant the “Principle People”. Before the intervention of European cultures they were known as the, ”People with large tipi flaps”. The Kiowa expanded their territories through out the southern plains, which is known as modern day Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. The mid-1900 century the Kiowa Indian tribe had several treaties with the United States, but it was the Medicine lodge treaty with the southern plains tribes that relocated the Kiowa’s into reservation located in present day Oklahoma. During the 1970s American Indians in California were at a disadvantaged that included unemployment, poverty, unsanitary living conditions, deteriorating homes, and illness like diabetes, pneumonia, and hepatitis. As a means to deal with the hard life on the reservation some tribes included gaming to their way of life. The idea behind incorporating casinos to the reservation was to achieve some measure of economic self sufficiency (Weeber 85). It is important to mention that there are many Native American tribes not cashing in on casino profits, because of moral or traditional reasons, or because they are geographically in a bad area (Canby 332). Some of these tribes are still without electricity, water, paved roads, and medical facilities among other necessities (Barker 155). In this paper I will show how the Pechanga tribe flourished from poverty because they adopted gaming as a form of economic growth. Next, I will talk about the internal struggle, known as “disenrollment” that has affected the tribe before and after the adoption of gaming. Last, I will explain the tribe’s power to disenrollment of members, citing Martinez v. Santa Clara Pueblo, and will show how they continue to use the ruling today.

A single group of indigenous people or single Native American group does not exist but many. Early America had many groups of Native Americans that can be organized by regions: Eastern Woodlands, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Great Basin. This analysis will focus on the Southwest Native Americas. The Southwest refers to modern day Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Northern Mexico. This region consisted of three major cultures, the Mogollon, Hohokam, and Anasazi people. In the Southwest, all three groups engaged in extensive farming more than groups in the Eastern Woodlands. The essential tribal units of the Creeks were called Idalwa or Towns that resembled of a Greek city-state. Creeks did not have one single tribe but a collection of other tribes, the oldest town appeared to have been Cusseta, Coweta, Arbeka, Coosa, and Tuckabatchee. These people, named Native Americans or American Indians, have a unique and singular culture and lifestyle unlike any other. Native Americans were divided into several groups or tribes.
