A career in nursing is extremely important in today's society. Without nurses to assist doctors in the care of patients, the quality of patient care may not be the same. Nurses do not just serve a great role in our community, but they also are just as needed as a police officer patrolling the streets or a teacher in the classroom. Although it may seem very easy to become a nurse, one's desire must be very strong in order to to actually pursue a career in nursing. Pediatric nursing is not just a profession that one would desire, but is a profession that is widely needed. The study of Pediatrics began in the 1800's under the influence of Abraham Jacobi (Hockenberry, etal). Jacobi went on to open a childrens clinic in the New York Medical College. "Pediatrics became a separate discipline from obstetrics"(Pearson 2005). Since that time pediatric nursing has greatly advanced. The first children's hospital in the United States opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1855 with the purpose to decrease childhood mortality rates through research. In terms of educational background, pediatric nurse requirements include either an associates or bachelor's degree in nursing. An associates degree typically takes two years to complete while a bachelors degree takes up to four years. Nurses can expect good job prospects regardless of their degree, but a bachelor's degree offers the best opportunites for advancement and pay. "In order to obtain your RN license, you must obtain an associates or bachelors degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program"(Pearson 2005). Then you must contact the Board of Nursinf in the state in which you are seeking your license to obtain eligibility requirements and to request the licensure application. When they laugh at something we say, it makes us feel great. When they want a hug before we leave the room, it makes us feel special. When they come back to visit months after discharge and have grown so much you have to look at mom to make sure it's the same kid, it's like no other feeling. When they get really sick, you suffer and when they die, you grieve. They keep us human. Pediatric nursing is not only a job that one would need to just desire to do. This is a job that a person would need to put their whole heart into. A career in nursing is extremely important. One's desire must very very strong.
