The Parthenon and Pantheon are great ancient temples built at different times, they come from different cultures and time yet they share many similar architectural style. The Roman and the Greek culture have influenced the architecture around the world till date.
The Parthenon may be one of the greatest architectural achievements by the Athenians in Athens. Athens was one of many Greeks city-state, In the 5th Century Athens was the most powerful city-state. This precinct becomes a sacred one rather than a defensive one. This building has had tremendous influence because it’s the birthplace of democracy and it’s extraordinary architectural refinement. The metopes have a scene that a show Greek is battling various enemies either directly or metaphorically. On the west side is a mythical battle against the amazon, on the south side the battle between the Lapiths verses Centaurs, on the east the battle between to Gods verses the Titans and on the north wall the Greeks verses the Trojans. This art represents a balance and a sense of control, which was so important to the Greeks. The Parthenon was a symbol of the city’s wealth, power and a gift to Athena. Inside the temple stood a very large statue of Athena, made out of gold and ivory that no longer exists. The Parthenon served as a church until the Ottoman Turks conquered Athens in the 15th century, when it became a mosque. In 1687 it was used to store gunpowder, during a Venetian siege of the Acropolis it was ignited and the explosion blew out the heart of the building, destroying the roof and parts of the wall and colonnade.
The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman monuments. The Pantheon is one of the oldest standing structures in Rome today, finished in 124 CE by the Roman emperor Hadrian. The original building was build in 27 BCE by Marcus Agrippa and was destroyed by fire, then rebuilt was in 80 CE and was hit by lighting and burned down.
