Yesselin Azcona Sociology 100 Prof. Tavakol April 27, 2016 The Scope Within the Nature of Paraphilias Throughout the world, every society views sexual deviance differently. To some, sexual assault may be traditional or common, and to others, it can be viewed as aberrant or deviant. One of the most known sexual deviations are called paraphilias. Paraphilias are bizarre or strange sexual practices that involve frequent sexual urges or fantasies that require nonhuman objects (such as leather or handcuffs), humiliation or pain, and children or a non-consenting adult that occur over a period of at least six months. The word “paraphilia” comes from a combination of para and philia. Para means “beyond, alongside of aside from subsidiary to or faulty.” …show more content…
“Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment” (Birdchard, Thaddeus p.162, APA, 2000). Although, when paraphilias include unwilling or underage victims, they are deemed socially damaging and subject to sanctions. These outlawed paraphilias are frotteurism, voyeurism, exhibitionism, sadomasochism and pedophilia. Paraphilias are mostly common in men, First and Tasman (2006) note that about 95% of all paraphilias are practiced by men and describe it as male sexuality “gone awry” (Birdchard, Thaddeus p.162). Money and Ehrhardt mention that when an adolescent boy finds himself confronted by paraphilic images, he “knows that he is rewarded by them as the signs of the ecstatic feeling of orgasm” (Birdchard, Thaddeus p. 162, p. 149). It is also said that, “we do not …show more content…
Another study shown by Seto, Michael C. surveyed 50 members of a Dutch working group on pedophilia, this study was done by Bernard (1975). It revealed that most of the respondents preferred boys, others preferred age being age 11 or 12. Also, more than half of the respondents were currently having sexual contact with a child, and more than half had been charged for sexual behavior against children. Bernard’s study proved that pedophilia is different within any person who possess it, it can vary within a good amount of characteristics. As stated by Seto, Michael C., Bernard found that, some respondents indicated that they were quite young when they became aware of their sexual interest in young children, and 90% indicated that they did not wish to give up their sexual contacts with boys, despite criminal discipline or involvement in treatment. There were also clinical samples done according to Seto, Michael C. These clinical samples presented a further source of enlightenment. Galbreath, Berlin and Sawyer (2002) reported data from 39 individuals who used the internet for sexual purposes. The study Galbreath, berlin and Sawyer managed disclosed that, 55% percent of the outpatients had downloaded child pornography, and 34% had attempted to meet a minor for sex through the internet.

When the authors begin to discuss these children as being sexual individuals it make its somewhat difficult to read as in society we often view children as innocent, vulnerable and in need of protection from adults. However the authors make it clear that children are not asexual, they do experience arousal and engage in sexual practices. This from of adult understanding still remains taboo in s...
When a late adolescent or adult is primarily or exclusively attracted to a minor child sexually they become diagnosed with the psychiatric disorder pedophilia. Mostly a person is not diagnosed with this disorder unless they have had this attraction for six months or longer. This attraction can be in the form of fantasies which are sexually arousing to the perpetrator, or the urge to engage in sexual activities with a minor child. In addition, in order to be diagnosed the molester will have to have acted on these urges or suffered from some type of distress, which will be result from having these feelings. Also the molester should be at least sixteen years old with the victim being younger than them by a minimum of five years.
Sexuality is very diverse, in some instances normality is based on the cultural context of the individual 's society. In "The other side of desire" by Daniel Bergner, the author goes in depth into the lives of four individual 's whose lust and longing have led them far down the realms of desire. The current paper addresses the four individual 's Jacob, the Baroness, Roy, and Ron each exhibits a paraphilia that may or may not meet the full criteria in the DSM-5. Furthermore, each person’s specific paraphilia is conceptualized and explained in depth. Countertransferential issues anticipated before working with these individuals is analyzed and clarified. Also, the apprehension of sexual arousal and sexual behaviors is conceptualized into normality
Indicate your recommendations for dealing with a person who has each of the 9-listed paraphilia. For example, should the legal system respond in some way? Consider various degrees of a paraphilia as well. Should a person who practices Asphixiophilia with a consenting life partner be treated the same way as a person who practices Asphixiophilia with an unsuspecting, non-consenting sexual partner?
Pedophilia is a medical diagnosis, which is defined as a psychiatric disorder in adults or older adolescents, ranging from ages 16 and older. Pedophilia is characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children, unusually ages 13 and under. The victim of a pedophile is usually at least five years younger in the case of adolescent pedophiles. The word pedophilia derives from the Greek word: παῖς (paîs), meaning "child," and φιλία (philla) meaning "friendly love" or "friendship. This literal meaning has been altered toward sexual attraction in modern times, under the titles "child love" or "child lover," by pedophiles who uses symbols and codes to identify their preferences.
Paraphilia has evolved as a term generally referenced as sexually deviant behavior to a broader term and divided into a disorder by the DSM-5. Paraphilia’s are often misconstrued as sexually deviant behavior that is misunderstood by the general public. In this paper, I will attempt to have a better grasp of what a paraphilia is, how to treat paraphilia from a therapeutic standpoint and attempt to discern when a paraphilia may need additional referrals and/or treatment. This paper will also examine the difference between a paraphilia that may be treated through cognitive behavioral therapy and paraphilic disorders, in which distress is found and may need further intensive treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one method of psychotherapy
Sexual fantasy had often been defined as being almost any form of mental imagery that can be viewed as being sexually arousing to that individual (Bartels, 2013, p. 7) which can result in deviant sexual behaviour. Many offenders have sexual fantasies and the sexual arousal gained from these fantasies sometimes isn’t enough which therefore leads the offender acting the fantasies out on another individual regardless of the trauma or pain they inflict. The mental imagery of the fantasy can become less arousing and this can lead to them performing these fantasies in real life to get the sexual gratification they had when they first developed the fantasy. The offender in the article, Marc, Ronald’s, made his victim wear nappies and plastic underwear while he was assaulting and raping her which portrays the idea that he was fulfilling a sexual fantasy he may have had; this could link back to previous childhood experiences that may have caused trauma to the offender. Law and Marshall’s (1990) account of sexual fantasy has shown to have a similar assumption as McGuire et al (1965) that sexual fantasies are a stimulus that is able to be conditioned and fantasizing is a deliberate act by an individual.
In the United States, we have many different culture groups and traditions. Inside those culture groups they have their own beliefs. Some are accepted and some are not. One belief that is not accepted in all races is child molestation. In this paper, these topics will be discussed: the definition of child molestation, the persons who are usually the perpetrators, the signs and effects of child molestation, and the consequences if one is caught doing this act.

The term “fetishism” first came to light in 1887. Psychologist Alfred Binet first presented the terminology to explain those that feel sexually attracted to inanimate objects. As the years passed, other psychologists such as Richard von Krafft-Ebing and Sigmund Freud made adjustments to the word until it encompassed all overwhelming urges to use an object or part of the body that is normally considered nonsexual to reach sexual fulfillment. (Sexual Fetishism, 2003, Metacalf, Luke, Nationmaster.com) Until the time of the sexual revolution, fetishes where thought of as abnormal or deviant behaviors and mental illnesses. However, in more recent years the more acceptable “paraphilia” has been used to label those who have peculiar sexual desires. (Crooks & Baur, (2013). Our Sexuality (12 Edition) Page 488)
Over the course of 70 years there have been many attempts at lowering libido by using various antiandrogen hormonal medication such as diethylstilboestrol, medroxyprogesterone acetate, cyproterone acetate, leuprolide acetate and goserelin. These feature the hormones either progesterone or oestrogen which have all been customarily effective in diminishing or lowering sexual desires and impulses in subjects (Samantha Vaillancourt, 2012). Paraphilia is a condition that many repeat sexual offenders suffer from and makes them undergo abnormal sexual desires which can result in them partaking in dangerous and extreme activities in order to live their sexual fantasies. In order to treat those who have Paraphilia one would ingest a luteinizing releasing hormone (LHRH) such as leuprolide and goserelin. These agonists reduce testosterone to low levels and generally stops repeat violations as their intense sexual drive and desire is lessened (Joo Yong Lee, 2013). Chemical Castration has become a more popular method of punishment for sex offenders and treatment for those with Paraphilia for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is significantly more convincing than surgical castration and ankle bracelets as these methods are not effecting libido therefor the offender might want to reoffend even after incarceration. Also, contrary to surgical castration antiandrogen medication can be reversed if is suitable for the subject. Lastly, sexual offenders may want to undergo chemical castration
Throughout the world, the protection of children is the main priority. When it comes to the United States, pedophiles are recognized as a threat to the wellbeing of kids of ages of 13 and under. Pedophilia is a mental disorder that can be treated; however, there is no cure for it. This means that pedophiles could be aided in a manner that protects both the pedophile and the youth. In the United States pedophilia is viewed more as a criminal case than a mental disorder resulting in criminal cases of pedophilia not decreasing and the endangerment of the pedophile and their mental health.
With technology becoming easier and easier to use and in part due to the high sexual emphasis in the American culture, men and women are being exposed to pornography earlier and earlier, with the average age being about 12 for men and 13 for women (Gilkerson). These children easily keep their internet wanderings secret from their less technologically savvy parents, as about 62% of teens say their parents know little or nothing about the websites they visit (San Diego Court).
Sex is generally defined the medical definition involving the sex organs, and participation by more than one party, but as humans are complicated beings this is insufficient to provide an account of sex. In Thomas Nagel’s essay “Sexual Perversion” he addresses the psychological account of sexuality with a phenomenological approach. Nagel describes a scenario of Romeo being aroused by Juliet, and Juliet being aroused by Romeo, and Romeo being aroused by Juliet’s arousal, and so on and so forth (Nagel 37). This progression of sexual arousal between two parties is the basis for which Nagel understands of sex. This progression eventuates in physical contact wherein the other becomes more and more “possesible” by physical contact, and the progression of arousal (Nagel 39). This progression of arousal in two parties, and the embodiment by physical contact is how Nagel describes sex. This definition provides Nagel with a basis for describing sexual perversion as anything that lacks the progression of arousal between two or more conscious individuals eventuating in physical contact that emb...
