Something amazing about art is that everyone sees it in a slightly different manner. Some people might see a deep meaning behind a work of art, while others think it looks bland and unimaginative. When we learn all the processes and techniques used in art, not admiring it is almost impossible. Girl before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso is a unique work of art because Picasso used various techniques that entice and intrigue the viewer. At first glance of the painting, there are many things that grab my attention. The first thing being the odd figure of what looks like a woman; her body is composed of different shapes and lines. It almost looks like half of her face is joined with the face of a different woman. I see the woman holding a large mirror that shows a blurred, darkened reflection of herself. The most eye-catching part of this piece is the use of vivid color; there are a lot of cool tones within the focal point of the piece, which is the girl and the mirror. It seems like Picasso used warm tones that highlight certain features of the woman and mirror. For example, the mirror is emphasized with orange as well as the cheeks and lips of the girl and her reflection. Another technique Picasso used is sfumato, or a soft light that dissolves detail. The woman’s features in the mirror are similar to the actual women, except they are softer and harder to identify. The reflection also mimics the woman, but the face is composed of several shapes, rather than lifelike facial features.
