Pharmacy is going to consume my life pretty soon, so I needed to figure out what my end goal was. The Pathways exercises allowed me to realize just what I want from my future career. It made me contemplate what is important to me and what I enjoy doing. I was able to do some research on potential careers, and it was a good start to figuring out my life. When I was completing the Pathways exercises, I focused on my personal beliefs and interests. Family is my number one priority, and it comes before career in my eyes. Patient contact, my ability to help people, and the continuity of relationships were three other aspects that I ranked high in the evaluation. Outpatient hospital pharmacy requires strong communication skills, especially with co-workers. I will also need to continue my education and training throughout my career to stay up to date on the latest medication available for my patients. One pharmacist reported in the APhA Career Survey that pharmacists in this field should be willing to work in different environments. I think I would be a good fit for the major responsibilities of outpatient health system pharmacy. I like to talk to people, and I believe I am good with forming relationships with others. Communication should not be a problem, and lifelong learning should not either. I am looking forward to keeping up with the advances in the medical field. I am not entirely sure what “different environments” means, but I am willing to try anything.
I really like the fact that I will be able to have direct patient contact and a large amount of continuity in my relationships with this profession. Teamwork also plays a big role in this field, and that is one of my strengths. I will get to collaborate with other professionals, but I like that I will not actually be educating them most of the time. This profession would also allow me to have a predictable work schedule and parental leave opportunities which will allow me to spend time with my family. I do plan on following through with the pharmacy track. It still peaks my interest, and I am excited to learn all I can about it. At this time, I believe a community pharmacy or an outpatient health system pharmacy would be the best choice for me. I would get to interact with patients every day and form relationships. I would also have a regular schedule. I know my hometown pharmacists fairly well, and I have shadowed there once. I plan to try to shadow in different environments if I can, as well. I also still have a dream of working in pediatrics, so I hope I can still pursue that career as a
