How impactful can jealousy be? In the play Othello, you discover how jealousy can create tension in a given situation and how it even has the capability of driving a person insane. Othello also exploits the destructive nature of jealousy by showing how it can tear relationships apart. We often underestimate the power of jealousy and overlook it’s power. Jealousy has a large effect on our emotions, feelings, and decision-making, which can be catastrophic when mixed with relationships. It does not take long after reading the first couple scenes of Othello to realize jealousy is one of the main themes of the plays. Iago has been hearing rumors of Othello allegedly sleeping with his wife, Emilia. Iago is already furious with Othello for not being appointed Lieutenant, and after hearing these rumors, his hate for Othello goes through the roof. Iago is determined to ruin Othello’s life after hearing these rumors, even though he has no proof that they are true. Iago makes this rash decision because he is overtaken by jealousy. Iago’s jealousy of Othello grows so strong that he decides to come up with a destructive plan that will ruin people’s lives forever, “Trifles light as air Are to the jealous confirmations strong As proof of holy writ.” (III.4.332-334). At this point in the play, Iago is clear about the nature of his evil plan, and clearly understands the intent of his actions. This evidence is enough to prove that jealousy has completely overtaken Iago and his thought process and decision-making.
Although Othello is just as guilty of jealousy as Iago, his form of jealousy is different in a way. Iago was overtaken by jealousy, causing him to want to destroy people's lives. Othello never wanted to ruin anyone’s life or be caught up in drama. He just wanted to live his life and do his job as best as possible, but Iago got in
