There are many heroic individuals in history that have shown greatness during a time of suffering, as well as remorse when greatness is needed, but one individual stood out to me above them all. He served as a hero among all he knew and all who knew him. This individual, Simon Wiesenthal, deserves praise for his dedication to his heroic work tracking and prosecuting Nazi war criminals that caused thousands of Jews, Gypsies, Poles and other victims of the Holocaust to suffer and perish. In the height of the war, Oskar Schindler recognized that he could use his power and prestige to do more good by saving people’s lives rather than just by making money. Oskar Schindler was a German spy in the Nazi Party.He was also a very wealthy businessman who owned a war goods manufacturing factory in the World War II era. Schindler managed to employ 1,200 Jews in his factory in an effort to save them. While Schindler did this, a new concentration camp opened up near him that was run by the notorious Amon Goth. Schindler cultivated a relationship with Goth, so whenever Goth would try to take the Jews to his camp, Schindler would bribe him with black market goods. Later on in the war the camp was forced to shut down due to the advance of the Allies. Schindler got word that all of his Jewish workers would be shipped to Auschwitz with the other Jews. Oskar Schindler accomplished many things within his life, such as saving the Jews, being a German spy, and helping the economy. His accomplishments have benefited those throughout his life. Although his kindness for his fellow man ran deep, so did his greed for boosting his own personal status within the community. There are still those today that believe that Oskar Schindler only saved the Jews for his own personal gain, but there are also those that believe that he did it out of kindness. Known as Mischlinge, persons of deemed “mixed blood” or “hybrid” status faced extensive persecution and alienation within German society and found themselves in the crosshairs of a rampant National Socialist racial ideology. Controversially, these people proved somewhat difficult to define under Nazi law that sought to cleave the Volk from the primarily Jewish “other”, and as the mechanization toward Hitler’s “Final Solution” the Mischlinge faced probable annihilation. The somewhat neglected status of Mischlinge necessitates a refocusing on German racialization as well as reconsideration of the implications wrought by the alienation and ultimate persecution of the thousands of half and quarter Jews subjugated in Nazi Germany.
During the time of the Holocaust, there were many Jews who were being persecuted because of their religious beliefs. Although many individuals and groups were involved with the persecuting, many brave people stood up for the Jewish people and decided to save their lives. They did this by rescuing the Jews from the Nazis or other groups who were putting them in danger. These types of people were known as rescuers. The people who rescued the Jews from the Nazis including Corrie ten Boom and her family, the rescue operations, and a group of non-Jews called the Righteous Among the Nations, risked their lives to save the Jews.
What is a hero? A hero is defined as a brave or noble person, but this definition is not accurate after reading Arnold Geier's book Heroes of the Holocaust. This book deals with the true heroes of one the most repulsive and disgusting times in world history. The compilation of stories in this book are not so much about the survivors who tell the stories, but about the heroes who risked their lives and well being to come to the aid of others so these stories could be told. There are heroes such as Mr. Warszawski who sold his competitor's merchandise so the family could stay alive or Mr. DeJong who searched for days for his missing daughter. There are even the stories of German soldiers, who must not have believed in the atrocities surrounding them, and found ways to feed, clothe, or find better work in a labor camp. And finally there is the story of German SS officer Menke who recalled childhood memories to save a couple and pushed aside an implanted hatred for Jews. Throughout the whole book, the stories would not have been able to be told unless these heroes emerged and because of these heroes, we are reading these stories today.

Thomas Keneally’s Schindler’s List is the historical account of Oskar Schindler and his heroic actions in the midst of the horrors of World War II Poland. Schindler’s List recounts the life of Oskar Schindler, and how he comes to Poland in search of material wealth but leaves having saved the lives of over 1100 Jews who would most certainly have perished. The novel focuses on how Schindler comes to the realization that concentration and forced labor camps are wrong, and that many people were dying through no fault of their own. This realization did not occur overnight, but gradually came to be as the business man in Oskar Schindler turned into the savior of the Jews that had brought him so much wealth. Schindler’s List is not just a biography of Oskar Schindler, but it is the story of how good can overcome evil and how charity can overcome greed.
