This is a full day kindergarten classroom with all African American students. The students live in an urban impoverished area and some of the students are homeless. The teacher chose to read Otis, by Loren Long because it has an interesting storyline and well-developed characters. Otis is a small red tractor on a farm. The goals of this lesson are to develop vocabulary, identify problems, and find solutions.
The easier the words are to understand the broader the audience will be. Throughout the novel words and phrases that are known to be simple are used such as: “At first, Arrow isn’t sure whether to trust what she sees” (Galloway, 73). The use of words like “first” and “sees” helps the novel appeal to people of all ages and reading skill levels. The words could be altered to sound more sophisticated yet, Galloway chooses not the do that. This helps portray the emotions and thoughts of the character in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate. Galloway comprehends that people are more likely to understand when the words used are simpler; he creates minimalism to entice readers. The words and phrases are not complicated it is helpful for everyone reading the novel, its beneficial to the reader when they can absorb and understand what it really happening. This case study is based on Piaget’s theory of Cognitive development. Piaget's theory of cognitive development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence that is based mainly off of age, and was first developed by Jean Piaget. I will be testing this theory out on a six year old boy who I will call “Jordan.” I will be checking to see if Jordan falls in to the Preoperational stage of Cognitive development which ranges from age 2 until approximately age 7 and if he is in transition to Concrete Operational stage which ranges from age 7 until about 11 years. The following questions will be answered: Does he interpret language literally? Does he understand conservation? Does he think of things in terms of his own activities? Does he solve problems by pretending or imitating? Does Jordan have approximately 2000 words in his vocabulary?
The cognitive aspect utilizes Piaget’s theory of development. Piaget’s theory includes four stages: The Sensorimotor Stage, The Preoperational Stage, The Concrete Operational Stage, and The Formal Operational Stage (Siegler et al.,135). As the reader, we are allowed to walk in his shoes and experience the growth in his character. At the start of the narrative he speaks with fear and anger, but he remains hopeful. As stated in the text “ Over the course of a year , he pushed all of us, myself especially, to broaden our minds and cast aside the notion that being LD in some way limited our capacity to experience life to fullest ” (Rodis, Garon & Bascardin 2001, pp. 9). Oliver is inspired by his teacher Mr. Hoffman who challenged him to go beyond how others viewed him. In the aspect of learning, Oliver adjusted well throughout his years after Blake Academy. Cognitive development is very crucial in the development of a child. A friend of mine, Julie just recently had a perfect baby boy. Since Julie found out she was pregnant she has been reading book after book, each book that she has read talks about cognitive development, but never really explains what cognitive development is or how to improve ones development. Julie has asked me to help her to understand what she can do to give Hunter the best optimal cognitive development though out his life. I'm going to start by telling Julie exactly what cognitive development is, the four stages of cognitive development and what kinds of activities to do together as he gets older. I believe that this will help Hunter develop into a very smart child he most likely will be ahead of his classmate's in school and will excel through out his life.
Toddler in blue shirt – He appears to be around 18 – 24 months old. While his motor development appears to be weak, and he does not seem to have accomplished the self-help development or language development, he has accomplished other milestones; such as social/emotional development, by playing alone for short periods of time and asserting some independence, and cognitive development, by passing items from one hand to the other, although he is not able to stay with one activity for very long.

What kid hasn’t heard of Dr. Seuss? From “One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish” to “A person’s a person, no matter how small” to “From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere”, Dr. Seuss has filled the lives of children with whimsical stories and ideas. (8) Using casual dialect and everyday objects, he was able to spark the imagination of others. All the while, he instilled lessons into his writings. It is not a surprise that Dr. Seuss received an award for a “Lifetime of Contribution to Children’s Literature”. His work will be read and enjoyed for decades to come. All in all, no matter which Dr. Seuss story that the reader might select, his or her imagination will be sparked, and the reader will surely be entertained.

As I observed Ricky his cognitive development is somewhat normal. According to Piaget’s theory a child should by the age five should be on the Preoperational stage and be able use symbols such as words or pictures to represent objects. Piaget’ preoperational stage Infants and Children (p.322-326). According to the checklist Ricky was not able to draw on some letters and sounds such as f, s, t, and r. According to the Speech and Language checklist list by the age of five the child should master or say these letters. I also used the Speech and Language assessment to see if he tell me the day and schedule in sequence. Ricky was not able to understand or comprehend what I was asking him.
