The key aspect discussed in this essay is the reasoning whether or not Odysseus deserves the leadership award. There is multiple view point on the question of topic. But, in this essay we will identify who he does not. Majority of the actions Odysseus takes clarify he is not worthy to be compared to a leader. As for how poor his communicating skills are with his men and lack of complete honestly with them.
One strong point of why Odysseus is not suitable for the leadership award is poor communication skills towards him men. There are multiple situations in the story where if he were to have communicated better with his men, they would have survived. For instance, in The Cyclops in book 9, instead of listening to his men or even taking their ideas into consideration, he instead chooses to do what he wants to do. "Why not take the cheeses, get them stowed, come back, / throw open all the pins, and make a run for it?... Ah, how sound that was! Yet I refused I wanted / to see the caveman, what he had to offer..." Is the clear statement provided in lines 126-131. As for when he is brave while facing the Cyclops, when he once tried to keep him men alive, and when he risked his own life while pasting through the sirens. Yet overall he still does not deserve the award throughout the whole story he gets his men killed from arrogant acts and dishonestly.
In short, Odysseus does not deserve the leadership award due to lack of showing strong characteristics of a leader. He caused a lot pain and worry to the people that support him from his harsh actions. Odysseus does many things to make himself a bad leader. He doesn’t tell his men many things, he isn’t respectful to the gods or his wife, and he is constantly putting his men in danger just so he can go home. Odysseus is a selfish leader and only thinks about himself. Although he may have good intentions for himself by going home to see his family and the rest of his kingdom, he is a bad leader.
