Noche de Ra`banos (Night of the Radishes) La noche de los rábanos is one of the most unique folk art festivals in the world held annually on the 23rd of December in Oaxaca, Mexico. The event has its origins in the colonial period when radishes, that were native to China, were introduced by the Spanish in Mexico. The festival is dedicated to carving radishes and create scenes from sculptures to compete for prizes in various categories. As, the radishes and quickly wilt down and do not keep fresh after being carved, the entire event lasts only for few hours while the preparations start anywhere from few days to a week

From a proud Conquistador, to a castaway, a slave and trader, and then medicine man, Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to explore much of the southern coast of Texas. Cabeza was a 37 year old military veteran in 1527 when he left on the Narvaez Expedition to find gold and colonize the Gulf Coast. He was the expedition’s treasurer. Cabeza de Vaca was enslaved by Indians in 1528 when one of the rafts the crew made crashed on present day Galveston island, he then escaped in 1530 and joined/was enslaved by another tribe called the Charrucos until his escape with 3 other survivors in 1534. He then walked to Mexico City. Cabeza survived this ordeal because of the incredible patience he had, his skills of diplomacy and goodwill, and his amazing wilderness survival skills.
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, born as Juana Ramirez de Azbaje, is a well-known extraordinary figure from the colonial period. Sor Juana had a desire for education at such a young age. In the seventeenth century, it was the intellectual midpoint of Spanish colonial America. During this time Mexico City was politically and religiously the center of New Spain; the terrains went from California to Central America. In Latin American history the church and state defined women’s roles, which eventually change over time. Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz articulated her experiences though writing, she broke silence about racial and gender inequality, and her legacy remains today.
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is a national holiday in Mexico that commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in Puebla, Mexico. This holiday, celebrated on the fifth of May, has deep roots in Mexican culture, but in American-Mexican culture as well. Cinco de Mayo serves as a proud reminder of an unlikely victory, as well as a day to express and cherish Mexican pride and heritage.
A long time ago more than 500 years ago, there were Spanish Conquistadors who had landed in what is now referred to as central Mexico. I am going to tell you about a famous, yet kinda eerie celebration that takes place in mexico. This is a tradition celebrated by the Mexican Natives, most Mexican Americans (including myself) don’t even acknowledge this day, unless they happen to be visiting mexico at the time of this event.

Racism has resided within the Dominican Republic for centuries after the defeat of the Haitian Empire. Yet, the profuse racism came from the Presidency of Rafael Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo yearned to withhold the prevalence of white skin-tone in Dominican individuals. Trujillo initiated an anti-Haitian regime as he was determined to whiten his country. To present himself as a white Dominican, Trujillo wore makeup to lighten his appearance, to uphold his standards. Yet, the horrific, defining moment of his presidency was the Parsley Massacre. Trujillo started the massacre in 1937, as he sought to deceive his people by claiming the Haitians were practicing witchety, while claiming they kept a Dominican opponent in hiding. November 1st is considered the adult’s day of returning, and November 2nd is when all souls have returned from the dead and there is a big celebration. People of Mexico celebrate by making many baked goods and cooking meals, making objects such as masks and decorating papers and toy coffins to prepare for the return of the souls.

Tyrosinase is an enzyme found in Portabella mushrooms. Tyrosinase is the enzyme most responsible for the brown color of Portabella mushrooms, as it is found in larger amounts than other pigmentations. Tyrosinase is also found in Tyrosinase vesicles in the cell wall of Portabella mushrooms. Tyrosinase plays a huge role in Portabella mushrooms in that it is active in most chemical reactions including oxidation, phosphorylation and other important mechanisms within the cell. The journal article examines the biochemical characteristics of Tyrosinase in Portabella mushrooms by specifically extracting it from the gill tissue. In order to effectively examine Tyrosinase, purification of this enzyme was to be extracted which resulted in difficulties because mushroom gill tissue is small in size while the Tyrosinase enzymes are abundant in such tissue. Adsorbents and precipitation methods were used to isolate Tyrosinase. The American culture is filled with scenes of athletes, celebrities, and glamorous models with bodies molded into perfection, which plays into a false sense of reality and beliefs that we place on ourselves. The media also amps up the obsession with individuals becoming thin degrading people who are naturally curvaceous.
