Nirvana: Nevermind In 1991 Nirvana exploded onto the Seattle grunge rock and alternative rock scene with their album Nevermind. The album’s cover art is still one of the most controversial even though the album is considered to be one of the top 100 albums of all time.
I first heard Nirvana's single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at my friend’s house and that day I wanted to know who Nirvana was, and how do I get my hands on this CD. At the time, I was only 14 and the next day I asked my mom a ride to the local record store to pick up the CD. I walked into the store and found the album on the shelf. In an interview before Kurt Cobain’s death, he was asked about the album cover, and I remember him saying that he was watching a documentary on underwater childbirths and he was fascinated by it. Kurt was so fascinated with it; he wanted it for an album cover. He later decided that something like childbirth would be too graphic for an album cover and decided to go with the now iconic nude swimming baby instead.
The nude baby could represent the band being thrown helplessly into the world naked and vulnerable. “Come as You Are” is one of the songs on the Nevermind album. The first line of “Come as You Are” is “Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be” makes me think about the album cover and how the nude baby may fit in. We are born naked and “come as you are” is a possible reference to being young, nude, and vulnerable.
The baby on the album cover is shown floating in a pool and the blue chlorinated pool water could represent purity and youth. The water could also represent the world that Nirvana has been thrown into. The new band is helpless and without control, and if they do not help themselves or learn how to swim, the world will drown
