The owners of the slaves thought slaves didn't know anything because that's how they thought, they thought slaves were dumb and would never learn how to read but the other slaves knew just what they were doing. The final theme that's very important in NightJohn is leadership. NightJohn is for sure the leader of all the slaves even though he doesn't want to think of himself as higher than the other slaves. He teaches the other slaves the alphabet and eventually how to read and write. He even has a bunch of kids go into the woods at night for “school” to teach them how to read and write.
