New Jersey historical society is a straw wide private, non profit historical library and museum. It is also the head quarters of the Essex club. Physical records of New Jersey's past and present are collected at the historical society. New Jersey historical society encourages public to use it collections for discovery, exploration and research. Historical library is open to public on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 12a.m. to 5 p.m. Newark symphony hall has a long and rich cultural history of New Jerseys art, education and entertainment program. The exterior of the building is built with ionic columns. The interior is marble designed with gold leaf ornamentation in Egyptian and Greek styles. Fairmount cemetery is a Victorian cemetery with many beautiful monuments. The Fairmount cemetery memorial is a 4 storage built in 1920s. The memorial is made of native granite with 3000 crypts and 600 niches. The cemetery offers research services and private tours. There are 150,000 graves in the 150 acre cemetery. Jewish museum of New Jersey was built in 1923. In early 20th century, there were many east European Jewish immigrants who came to New Jersey. In Virginia, there is a national cemetery visited by thousands a year. This graveyard is called Arlington National Cemetery, a home to a variety of tombs and memorials in order to remember those who have lost their lives. I visited to Bob Bullock History Museum in the weekend and learned about the history of texas. I started my tour in numerical order from the first floor all the way to the third floor. The first floor is titled “Our Global Kitchen, food, nature, culture” and it covered just that. It covered the food culture and the types of soil and plants. It also covered natives of the land planted prior to the existence of Texas and what they ate. It also showed the type of traditional texan food. They presented examples of native eating sets like wooden bowls and plates and modern ceramic plates and what the food culture would be like in the future. The museum I chose to visit this week was the North Carolina Museum of History located in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 13, 2014. It was a good time for this assignment because we were traveling this week to North Carolina so it made a great stop for us during our stay. Taking World Cultures has given me a new perspective on the foundation of our history and heritage. North Carolina holds a large amount of history for the United States. It was one of the original 13 colonies and was the first state to declare its independence from the British. North Carolina was known for its slave planation system to cultivate tobacco and cotton to be exported. An exhibit that I found to be interesting at the North Carolina Museum of History was The Story of North Carolina. This museum is the largest exhibit ever produced at the N.C. Museum of History. This exhibit is one that would inspire anyone new or visiting the state to experience the history of North Carolina and to develop more of an appreciation and understanding of the culture and communities.
When you think of the Eastern Shore, you may think of seafood, beaches, annoying tourists, and other attractions. But, a more interesting thing that people don’t immediately think of are hauntings. Hauntings of the Eastern Shore are unique and interesting things that also influence our culture. There are many myths, attractions, places, museums, and interesting stories from different people. Not all paranormal activity is the same, they all have a uniquely fascinating story behind them that makes the Eastern Shore unique. “Each year, in the Fall, haunted houses, hayrides, and trails find a new and creepier way to scare Marylanders” (Cockrum).
Living in New England may tempt some, and outright be a daunting, almost horrific thought for some. With the Pantheon being built over 1700 years ago, it’s amazing that architects are still using features and techniques from this work of architecture in modern creations. The use of this type of classical architecture will continue to be used in works for public space due to its remarkable exterior appearance and it’s long lasting structural durability. When both Jesse hall and the Pantheon are compared it is possible to see their similarities from the types of domes that top each, their external facades, and their interior plan. While they share many similarities, the differences that Bell and Binder used in their creation make this work of architecture unique to many other public spaces.
The Holocaust Memorial Museum was built to honor those who were directly affected by the Holocaust. “Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God himself. Never” Elie Wiesel (“Holocaust Encyclopedia”). While some believe the building of the museum was a political act for President Carter, others were very optimistic of the outcome. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum was a marvelous achievement for this country and those who dedicated their time and effort to this wonderful building. This museum not only has an interesting history and opening, but exhibits inside are nothing in comparison to the statistics of this grand foundation.
Living in Northern Virginia allows me to visit a plethora of culture-enhancing sites around the Washington, D.C. area. For this assignment, I visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. which is located a few blocks from the National Mall which features the more popular Smithsonian Museums such as the Museums of American History, Air and Space, Natural History and the National Gallery of Art. The Islamic Moors occupied the Iberian Peninsula between 711 CE and 1492 CE, from the Middle Ages of Europe until the conquer of Grenada. This investigation attempts to evaluate the impact of technology and science in Moorish Spain. The relevance of this investigation is found in its inquiry as to the basis of post-Middle Ages European science, which became modern science. The degree to which relatively advanced Islamic astronomy was present in Moorish Spain, the degree to which Islamic-level astronomy was found in pre-Moorish (600 CE-700 CE) European astronomy, and the degree to which post-Moorish (1500 CE – 1600 CE) European astronomy reflected Islamic astronomy will be addressed in order to form conclusions. These issues will be evaluated by examination of “When the Moors Ruled Spain”, a documentary directed by Rowan Deacon, The Venture of Islam, by Marshall Hodgson, and online resources detailing the history of the Moors, European science, and Islamic science.
