Strengthening the Government Through a Disaster
The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1940 in American society. It was a challenge to the American democracy system and American society. The American society was built on individualism and hard work. However, the Great Depression created challenges that could not be answered from hard work alone and resulted in a demand for more federal intervention, resulting in the formation of the New Deal programs created by Franklin D. Roosevelt. This was a program that hired three million 18-25 year old males that helped improve infrastructure in American society. According to Nature’s New Deal by Neil M. Maher, it was responsible for planting two billion trees, slowing soil erosion, creating bridges, and thousands of miles of hiking trails. It improved American society while providing jobs to young men who were unemployed prior to the creation of the CCC. Even though the program ended in 1942, it was not the end of the impact it had on society. After World War II, it provided a place for people to hike, camp, and picnic. Another important aspect of the CCC was the program’s role in preparing the young men for military conflict. The focus shifted from helping replenish nature with preparing young men for the military service. For example, defense training started with five hours of classroom study and eventually constructing target ranges and airplane landing fields. Another example of the success of the CCC is the influence it had over state governments postwar. Many decided to enroll in graduate programs in college and led to newly created state conservation corps programs. The success of the CCC eventually led to a larger movement of the environment during the 1970s. Other programs that bettered the country was the Works Progress Administration. It allowed for the building of parks and stadiums and this led to a long term advantage of the economy. Many of the New deal programs had a long term effect on the economy and were not just a quick answer to a long term problem.
